| Notes |
- The identity of Thomas's wife isn't known for sure. She may have been Elizabeth SURRIDGE: a marriage between Thomas Minter (bachelor of this parish) and Elizabeth Surridge (spinster of this parish) took place at St Paul, Shadwell on 17 May 1809. The register entry appears on the London Metropolitan Archive at Ancestry.co.uk and bears Thomas's signature. An 1809 marriage would be just right for the 1810 birth of Thomas Henry Dickerson Minter, Thomas & Elizabeth's supposed first child, and the church is in roughly the right place.
An Elizabeth SURRIDGE, 23 days old, was baptised at St Dunstan, Stepney on 27 August 1786, father Edward of Poplar, waterman, mother Elizabeth. This might have been the Elizabeth who married in 1809. The birth year, 1786, compares well with the age of Elizabeth Minter as shown in the censuses below.
1841 census: in Church Street, St Nicholas Deptford, Greenwich, Kent, Thomas (55, shipwright), Elizabeth (55), Robert (25, waterman), David (25, waterman), Henry (20, carpenter), Charlotte (19) and Elizabeth (14). All born in Kent.
1851 census: at 9 Queen Elizabeth College, Greenwich, Thomas (66, almsperson - shipwright, born St Lawrence, Kent, noted as being deaf) and Elizabeth (65, born Deptford, Kent).
1861 census: still in Queen Elizabeth College, Greenwich Road, Greenwich, Thomas (76, formerly boat builder, born Isle of Thanet, Kent, noted as being deaf.) and Elizabeth (76, born Deptford, Kent).
Both died in the 1860s.
November 2010: Bob Gamble contacted the at Draper's Hall to see if the records of Queen Elizabeth College in Greenwich held any reference to Thomas Minter and his wife Elizabeth. He received the following reply:
"Dear Mr Gamble
Thank you for your enquiry concerning your ancestors Thomas and Elizabeth Minter. The principal extant source of information about residents at the almshouse for the period in question are the minutes of the Court of Wardens, the Company's committee responsible for the almshouses. Within these I have traced the following:
21 November 1850 Court of Wardens minute - Thomas (and his wife though this was not minuted) Minter was admitted to Queen Elizabeth's College on the presentation of the Parish of Deptford one of the parishes who were authorised to present people for admission.
28 July 1868 Court of Wardens minute - Thomas Minter had died (date not given and it is not stated what happened to his widow though she did not remain at the almshouse).
I have attached a brief history of the almshouses for your information.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further queries.
Yours sincerely
Miss Penelope Fussell

The 1851 and 1861 entries are believed to relate to this couple and point to Thomas being a member of the Whitstable Minters. May 2006: Cliff Minter agrees, so what was originally the Charlton family has been merged with the Whitstable Minters.
February 2007: the inclusion of Thomas Henry Dickenson Minter (1810) and John Minter (1813) as the first two sons of Thomas and Elizabeth is speculative and may turn out to be incorrect. The justification for including them is outlined in their individual Notes.
