| Notes |
- The following was provided by Judith Kinnear in January 2007:
John was born on 14 April 1859 in Ballarat (b# 11105). His birth was registered on 4 July 1859 in Melbourne by his mother, Sarah. The certificate shows that no one was in attendance at the birth.
John married Emma Lammas on 7 August 1878 according to the rites of the Presbyterian Church. The marriage certificate gives John's age as 21, but he was in fact only 19 years old. He is identified on various certificates as a wood carter. In his spare time, he was also a cyclist of local note.
Emma Lammas is listed on the marriage certificate as the 18 years old daughter of Leonard Lammas and Phoebe Lammas nee Punchard. The witnesses to this marriage were James Minter and Mary Ann Minter, the groom's eldest brother and sister-in-law, and my [Judith Kinnear's] maternal great grandparents. (On her death certificate, however, Emma is listed as the daughter of Leonard Lammas Brock and Phoebe Lammas Brock, former name unknown. What was the source of the Brock?)
In the period 1891-1893, John and Emma Minter were living at 152 Bridge Street in Bendigo. John appears in the Bendigo Directory of 1891 as: Minter, John, carter, Bridge-st.
Australian Electoral Roll, 1903 for Bendigo, Sandhurst East, Victoria includes:
John Minter, Bridge Street, Bendigo, contractor
Emma Minter, Bridge Street, Bendigo, home duties
1909 Electoral Roll, Sandhurst East, Bendigo, Victoria:
John Minter, Bridge Street, Bendigo, contractor
Emma Minter, Bridge Street, Bendigo, home duties
Ethel Minter, Bridge Street, Bendigo, home duties
George Herbert, Bridge Street, Bendigo, carter.
1914 Electoral Roll, Sandhurst East, Bendigo, Victoria:
John Minter, 152 Bridge Street, Bendigo, contractor
Ethel Minter, Bridge Street, Bendigo, home duties [daughter]
[John's wife Emma had died in 1910].
1919 Electoral Roll, Sandhurst East, Bendigo, Victoria:
John Minter, 152 Bridge Street, Bendigo, contractor
William John Minter, 152 Bridge Street, Bendigo, temp. postal emp. [? listed twice - see William John's Notes]
Mary Minter, 152 Bridge Street, Bendigo, home duties [it's not clear who Mary was].
1924 Electoral Roll, Sandhurst East, Bendigo, Victoria:
John Minter, 152 Bridge Street, Bendigo, contractor
Mary Minter, 152 Bridge Street, Bendigo, home duties [it's not clear who Mary was].
John Minter died at (152?) Bridge Street in Bendigo on 3 Aug 1924 at the age of 65 years (#8312). His death was due to cerebral thrombosis, cerebral softening, haemorrhage and heart failure. The informant for his death was his oldest son, G H Minter of Alma St, Murrumbeena, who was present at his father's death. John Minter was buried at White Hills Cemetery in the Church of England section in
the same grave as his wife. A headstone identifies Emma and John Minter as buried there, but none of their three infant children.
He died intestate, a widower, leaving no real estate but personal property not exceeding £201.6.8 in value. He was survived by his children, Phoebe Emma MORCOM, Rosetta CORR, George Herbert MINTER, Ethel May LYNCH and William John MINTER, 'his only surviving next of kin entitled by law to share in his property'. George Herbert (of Alma Street, Murrumbeena, a slate roof tiler, the elder son) sought Letters of Administration of his father's estate
