  Notes	James Minter II was born at Ashby in the district of Geelong on 17 May 1857. His birth occurred a few weeks after their arrival in Australia while his parents were apparently living in a tent on the beach in an area near the end of what is now O'Connell Street in West Geelong (Source: Muriel Dyer). His mother, Sarah Minter nee Judson, registered the birth in Geelong on 3 August 1857 and the document shows that no doctor, accoucheur or nurse was in attendance. James II lived all his life in Victoria. He married Mary Anne Riley on 22 Nov 1876 at St John's Presbyterian Manse, Sandhurst (now Bendigo). Mary Ann Riley was born at Ironbark, Sandhurst, on 28 Feb 1855. Their marriage certificate gives both their ages as 21 years, but James was in fact only 19 years old, having been born in 1857. In addition to the children of James Minter II and Mary Anne Riley listed, the family bible has an undated entry 'Sister born died Bendigo' between 'William H Minter born Bendigo March 23 1884' and 'Sarah Jane Minter Born Bendigo Died Bendigo', but the entries do not appear in chronological order. Wise's Victoria PO Directories of 1888-89 and 1891-92 include an entry in the Axedale section as follows: Minter James, Raglan Hotel. Some time after 1900, James and his family moved to Ascot Vale, a suburb of the city of Melbourne, where he was a horse trainer (and later a racehorse owner). In 1912, they moved to 'Portland Place' in Keilor Road, North Essendon where James had stables and trained horses including some that he and his wife owned. In addition, four of James II's sons (Jim, Henry William 'Bendy', George & Jack) were jockeys at some time, with Jim and George later becoming trainers. The notes below suggest this probably relates to James junior even though James junior's wife was May not Mary. The 1919 Electoral Roll for Essendon, Maribyrnong, Victoria included: at Keilor Rd, Essendon Minter, James, grazier Minter, Mary Ann, home duties Minter, George Edward, horse trainer Minter, William Henry, jockey at Port Place, Keilor Rd, Essendon: Minter, John Stephen, jockey at 34 William St, N Essendon Minter, Jane Archer, home duties [George Edward's wife] The 1924 Electoral Roll for Sunshine West, Corio, Victoria included: at Keilor Rd, Essendon Minter, James, grazier Minter, Mary Ann, home duties Minter, George Edward, horse trainer [at this time, George Edward was between marriages] Minter, William Henry, jockey. The 1931 Electoral Roll for Melton, Corio, Victoria included: at Keilor Rd, Essendon Minter, James, grazier Minter, Mary Ann, home duties Minter, William Henry, jockey. There's another 1931 entry at Essendon, Maribyrnong: Minter, James, Keilor Road, farmer Minter, John, Keilor Road, jockey Minter, William, Keilor Road, jockey Minter, Jane Archer, 20 William Street, home duties [George Edward's wife]. The 1936 & 1937 Electoral Rolls for Essendon, Maribyrnong: Minter, James, Keilor Road, farmer [doesn't appear in the 1937 version] Minter, William Henry, Keilor Road, jockey Minter, Jane Archer, 20 William Street, home duties [George Edward's wife] Minter, Robina Naomi, 20 William Street, home duties [identity not established]. James's wife Mary Ann doesn't appear with him on the 1936 Roll and hasn't been found on any subsequent Roll up to when she died in 1940. In November 1936, James II and Mary Ann nee Riley celebrated the diamond anniversary of their marriage and a newspaper report appeared: PERSONAL ------------- There was a happy family gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Minter, Portland place, Keilor road on Sunday last, in celebration of the anniversary of their diamond wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Minter, who have lived in Essendon district for about forty years, both over eighty years of age. Mr. Minter was for a long period recognised as a successful horse trainer, and is the father of the well- known jockey Billy Minter and Jack Minter, also a rider of some note. About thirty relatives, including four sons and two daughters, besides several grandchildren and great children, assembled at the gathering. James Minter II died on 30 Mar 1937 at the age of 79 years at Portland Place in Keilor Road, North Essendon. The cause of his death was given as senility and cardiac failure. He was buried at Fawkner Cemetery on 31 Mar 1937 in plot RC-O-2576. Reports of his death appeared in Melbourne newspapers. From The Age, 31 March 1937: Veteran Trainer Dead. J Minter, an old-time trainer, died at his residence, "Portland Place," Essendon, yesterday. He was 79 years of age. In his day he had a good deal of success, scoring many wins with Portland Bob, Mindai, Vesperus, Grey Ronald, Jemlah and Laru. In his youth he had been a foot runner of note. His son, J. Minter is a Flemington trainer. Ballachulish, which has recently been showing fair form in the country, is one of his charges. James's widow, Mary Ann Riley, survived him by more than three years. She died on 5 September, 1940, (d# 8960) at Portland Place in North Essendon, and was buried at Fawkner Cemetery in the grave with her late husband. In 1924, the obituary for his brother, John, states that John was survived by two brothers - James, resident of Melbourne and William, resident of Kalgoorlie. WA.

  	James was 21 [in fact he was only 19], bachelor, a wood carter of Bank Creek, Sandhurst. Mary Anne was also 21, spinster of Kenrick Street, Sandhurst. The marriage was by licesnse according to the form of the Presbyterian Church. Both parties signed the register.
