    Notes 
    • At baptisms up to 1841 Charles was described as a labourer. From 1843 on he was described as a farmer.

      1841 census: in Common, Messingham, Lincs (all HUNSLEY), Charles (35, farmer), Ellen (30), George (15), Charlotte (10), Henry (8), Diana (6), Charles (4) and Eliza (2).

      The family emigrated to the USA before the 1851 census - a page by page review of all of the people in Messingham at the 1851 census doesn't shown Charles and family. No record of their departure from England has been found. The 1900 US Federal Census record for Charles's son George shows 1850 as the year George arrived in the US.

      There are some US census records at Ancestry which probably refer to Charles Hunsley and his family:
      1855 Illinois state census for Township 4, Macon County (shows the name of the head of household plus number of individuals in household): Charles HUNSLEY - 1 male between 10 & 20, 1 male between 50 & 60, 2 females under 10, 2 females between 10 & 20, 1 female between 20 & 30 and 1 female between 50 & 60. Livestock valued at $175.

      1860 US Federal Census of Macon County, Illinois, (all HUNSLEY, all born England), Charles (55, farmer, personal estate $150), Ellen (54), Henry (27, farmer, real estate $2000, personal estate $300), Harriet (16), Eliza (20), Edward (18, day laborer) and Charles (22, blacksmith).

      1870 US Federal Census of Willow Branch, Piatt County, Illinois, (all HUNSLEY, all born England), Charles (65, farmer), Helen (54 (sic)) and Edward (30, farmer).

      1880 US Federal Census of Decatur, Macon County, Illinois, (both HUNSLEY), Charles (75, staying at home, born England, parents born England) and Emily (65, wife, keep house). Charles's first wife Ellen had died in 1873; Emily was his second wife, as noted below, the mother of Charles's brother George's second wife.

      Charles's obituary appeared in the Decatur Daily Republican on 26 December 1884 (original at Ancestry.com):
      Death of Charles Hunsley
      Died - In this city at 12.30 am, Dec 25 1885, of old age, Charles Hunsley
      Deceased was born in Lincolnshire, England July 18, 1804, and in 1825 was married to Miss Ellen Campbell. In the fall of 1850 he came to America, landing at New Orleans, Nov 27, going thence to Ohio. He came to Illinois in 1852 and has lived in both Piatt and Macon counties.
      He was the father of twelve children, eight of whom are now living, four sons and four daughters - Henry and Edmond residing in Piatt county in this state; Charles, George and a daughter, Mrs James Jackson, in Macon county; Mrs A Done in Page Co, Iowa; Mrs Burky in Lamar, Mo and Mrs Anne Forshy, now a widow, in Springfield, Mo.
      His wife died Sept 18 1873, and in April, 1879, he married the mother of the present Mrs George Hunsley (Mrs Harrison), who during the many months of his last illness, proved a most untiring and devoted helpmate.
      Mr Hunsley was noted for his honesty and integrity in all business transactions. He was a most cheerful and genial companion, and in all the relations of his life was kind, forbearing and affectionate.
      Fifty-four years ago he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and for some years has been a member of Stapp's Chapel. As a christian he was faithful and consistent, ever ready to give testimony for Christ.
      The funeral will take place this afternoon from the residence of George Hunsley, at 2:30 o'clock. The remains will be taken to Haveley's graveyard, three miles south of Cisco, tomorrow morning.
