      Appeared in the Maidstone, Dover and Tunbridge Wells Directory and Court Guide, 1865 - 1866 (1) (Trade section) as John Minter, solicitor, Grace Hill, Folkestone and (2) (Clergy, Gentry etc) as Minter, solicitor, 50 James Street, Dover. Possibly also listed in the Canterbury Clergy, Gentry, etc, section as Minter, Old Dover Road, Canterbury.

      Appeared in F G Harrod & Co's Postal and Commercial Directory of Kent, 1867 (1) under Public Officers as coroner, John Minter Esq., Grace Hill, Folkestone (2) as a private resident, John Minter, Grace Hill, and (3) under Professions as John Minter, solicitor, etc, etc.

      1871 census (indexed under MENTER): at 6 Grace Hill, Folkestone, John (40, attorney and solicitor), Emmeline (34, born St Mary Axe, London) and Leonard (1). Also shown is Hilda, said to be a daughter, born Folkestone but age shown as 32 - most probably an enumerator's error. Thomasina GRIFFIN was still living with them. Alfred (13) was at school at Abington House School, Abington Street, Northampton. Robert (11) was a pupil at Grove House, Folkestone. Frank (9) was a pupil at Grove End House, Folkestone. There is no sign of Frank, Alfred or Robert in later censuses**.

      ** An Alfred Minter, aged 27, a lawyer, arrived in New York on 12 February 1883 on the 'Grecian Monarch'. There seems a good chance that this was John and Emmeline's son Alfred Thomas.

      1881 census: at 9 Guildhall Street, Folkestone, John (51, solicitor), Emmeline (44), Hilda (16), Stella (9), Florence (8), Herbert (6), Nellie (5), Emmeline's sister Thomasina (42) plus 3 servants. Leonard was at school at 36-42 Royal Road, Ramsgate.

      1891 census: at 2 Longford Terrace, Folkestone, John (61, solicitor), Emmeline (50), Hilda (25), Stella (19), Thomasina GRIFFIN (48, living on own means) and a servant. Daughter Nellie was a pupil at a school in Belsize Park, London. Herbert was a boarder at The Gables, a school in Eastbourne. Florence was a visitor at 31 Sunny Bank, Croydon, Surrey with Edward Constance, a pharmacist, and his wife and daughters.

Stella married (as Stella Georgina C.) in 1896 and in 1901 lived at Wharncliffe, Swanscombe, Kent with her husband, a physician and surgeon. Florence married in 1896 also (both in Kensington in the same quarter - a double wedding?) and in 1901 lived with her husband, a marine and insurance broker at 'Elmbrook', Cedars Rd, Hampton Wick, Middlesex. No sign of Hilda or Herbert.

      Cliff Minter quotes the following extract concerning John's death:
      "1907 22 June. Tragic death of Mr John Minter, well known Folkestone solicitor - one of the keenest practitioners in the country - depressed by physical infirmities (cataracts, deafness) committed suicide by shooting himself at Sandwich Hotel - practised for 57 years - age 77 - borough coroner - refused other public offices - a fine advocate - a man of wonderful memories."

      Jan Pedersen has provided copies of several newspaper reports containing details of the inquest into John Minter's death, and tributes to him. These are not reproduced here but are contained in a separate document.

      Buried in Cheriton Road Cemetery, Folkestone, with a large memorial gravestone.
