    Notes
    • The following appeared in The Times (London, England), Thursday, Apr 30, 1840; pg. 3; Issue 17345 (at Gale NewsVault, September 2012). It seems likely to refer to this Edmund Minter, although there is no corresponding death index entry. Edmund's brother John Thomas was certainly on steamboats although no reference to his being on the 'Harlequin' has been found.
      CORONER'S INQUEST
Last evening an inquest was held before Mr Payne at the King's Head, Tower, on the body of Edmund Minter, aged 13, who was found drowned off the Tower on Moday evening last.
It appeared from the testimony of several witnesses that the deceased came on board the Harlequin steamer, lying off the Custom-house, on Easter Monday last, for the purpose of seeing his brother, a sailor on board that vessel. He was in the habit of rowing himself in a small boat to and from the steamer. About 2 o'clock he accompanied his brother on board a Gravesend boat, and then returned by himself to the Harlequin, where he was last seen alive by one of the crew at 3 o'clock. He was then standing on the deck and looking over the side of the vessel. No evidence was given as to how the deceased got into the water, but the conjecture was that the vessel suddenly lurched, in consequence of the heavy swell occasioned by the number of steamers running on that day to Gravesend, and threw the deceased overboard. The body was found on Monday by a Custom-house officer named Clarke, near the Hamburgh tier of shipping moored off the Tower. - Verdict "Found drowned".
