| Notes |
- Censuses consistently give Thomas's birthplace as the Gloucestershire village of Winstone. Unfortunately hardly anything is known about his ancestors. Thomas's 1865 marriage certificate gives his father's name as William Minter, a farmer but this hasn't helped. A faint possibility is that Thomas started life as Midwinter - there were a few families of that name in Winstone in the 1850s and 60s - and for some reason changed his surname to Minter.
May 2009: from an email from Mel Willis, husband of the granddaughter of Amelia Jane Minter:
"As regards Thomas Minter he has been very consistent about his age and where he was born Winston, Gloucester but I can shed no light as to his exact date of birth. He joined the army 28/2/1863 at 6 o'clock P.M that he enlisted for the bounty of 1 pound with kit and I quote. Age last birthday:- 19 years
Occupation:-Laborer
Height:-65 inches
Circumference of chest :- 34 inches
Weight:- 137 lbs
Pulse:- 72 beats
Temperament:- good
Eyes:-Gray
Hair:- Brown
Complexion:- Fresh
He was considered fit but had one right molar decayed. His regimental No is 6363. Royal Artillery as a Driver, he signed on for 12 years but re-engaged to complete a total of 21 years. He is interred at Plumstead Cemetery, grave ref:-B1570 He died at 3, Lyford Street, Woolwich on 11/2/1916"
1851 census: not found. All of Winstone searched unsuccessfully. One of the Winstone Midwinter families, headed by William Midwinter, an agricultural labourer, includes a Thomas KEYLOCK, age given as 8, described as 'wife's son, born Cirencester'. This may have been the 'Male' KEYLOCK registered in Q1 1843 at Cirencester 11/244. William MIDWINTER married Anne KEYLOCK in Q4 1843, Cirencester 11/349. It's just possible that this was the boy who became Thomas Minter but there is no evidence to support this idea.
1861 census: aged 16, Thomas was a servant at Waddon Farm, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
Apr 2010:John J Minter has found a record at findmypast.com's Chelsea Pensioner collection which appears to refer to Thomas:
THOMAS MINTER born c1844, Winston, Cirencester, Gloucestershire,
Attested aged 19 on the 28th of February, 1863, The Royal Artillery.
WO97/3475/153
1871 and 1881 censuses: not found - Thomas and family were in India when the censuses were taken. Thomas was in the Royal Artillery from (at least) 1865 through to (at least) 1882.
When daughter Elizabeth Ann was baptised in June 1868, Thomas was a driver in B/23; when she died in later the same month, Thomas was a driver in B/20, Royal Artillery.
Thomas was still a driver in B/20 when son Henry Thomas William was baptised in August 1869.
When daughter Adelaide was baptised on 5 October 1871, Thomas was a gunner in B Battery, 20 Brigade, Royal Artillery. The same when Sarah Ann was baptised in 1874.
When daughter Amelia Jane was baptised on 9 October 1878, Thomas was a driver in B/6, Royal Artillery.
When sons Albert James and Arthur Frederick William were baptised in 1881 and 1882 respectively, Thomas was a driver in B/4, Royal Artillery.
It appears from the British India Office Ecclesiastical Returns (at findmypast.co.uk) that Albert James had a twin brother: a 9 month-old 'child of Dr. Minter, B/4 R.A.' named Alfred William Henry Minter died (of convulsions) on 12 November 1881 and was buried on the following day in Allahabad.
October 1884: labourer of 19 Morris Street, Woolwich.
June 1888: a labourer of 5 Lee Terrace, Kidd Street, Woolwich.
1891 census: at 5 Lyford Street, Woolwich, London, Thomas (46, general laborer), Ann (49, born Steeple Ashton, Wilts), Arthur F (9, scholar), Charles J (7, scholar) and William (3).
1901 census: at 5 Lyford Street, Woolwich, London, Thos (56, general labourer, HM Dockyard), Anne (55, born Devises (sic), Wilts), Arthur (18, skilled lab, Arsenal W), Chas (16, gen lab Arsenal W), Wm (12, attending school) and daughter Alice C or E GARNER (widow, 33, needle work).
1911 census: at 5 Lyford Street, Kidd Street, Woolwich, London (1 or 4 rooms), Thomas (head, 64, married, army(?) pensioner, labourer, born Winstone in Glostershire) and Ann (wife, 65, married 46 years, 11 children, 8 living 3 died, born Westbury in Wiltshire).
Form signed Thomas Minter.
This family appears in the LDS Pedigree Resource File.
The family also appears in the tree at http://www.ply.me.uk/genealogy/index.html and in several public trees on Ancestry but none has any more information than is recorded above. One tree has Thomas as Thomas Henry but doesn't explain why.

- Married by banns. Thomas Minter, of age, bachelor, driver Royal Artillery, of Artillery Barracks, father William Minter, farmer. Ann Togwell, minor, spinster of Artillery Place, father William Togwell, waterman. Thomas signed, Ann marked. Witnesses James Wakefield and Hannah Sparrow both signed.
Thomas's army service record also notes his marriage details as taking place on 9 October 1865 at Woolwich, Kent. However, the witnesses' names are shown as Pte. William Minter and Pte William Togwell. The latter was probably Ann's brother, who would have been about 22 at the time of the marriage. Pte. William Minter's identity has yet to be established: it's unlikely to have been Thomas's father but if was Thomas's brother it may be a clue to Thomas's ancestry.
