  Notes	1891 census: at No. 23 E Block, Peabody Builfing, Greenman Street, Islington, London (all DOWNEY), George (head, 30, shopman, china & glass, born Sudbury, Suffolk), Cary (wife, 26, born Knapton, Norfolk) and Rosina (daughter, 5 months, born Islington). 1901 census: at 3 Bismark Terrace, Prittlewell, Essex (all DOWNEY), George (head, 40, carman, born Sudbury, Suffolk), Caroline * (wife, 37, born Holsham, Norfolk), Alfred (son, 4, born Islington, London) and Edward (2, born Rochford, Essex). 1911 census: at 53 Burnaby Road, Southend-on-Sea (4 rooms) (all DOWNEY), George (head, 50, married, carman dustman, Town Council, born Sudbury, Suffolk), Caroline * (wife, 49, married 23 years, 9 children, 4 living 5 dead, born Knapton, Norfolk), Charles (brother, 48, widower, married 1 year, 1 child living, carman dustman, Town Council, born Sudbury, Suffolk), Alfred (son, 14, barbers assistant, born Rochford, Essex), Edward (son, 13, school, born Rochford, Essex) and Sidney (son, 7, school, born Southend, Essex). * according to the above, George had been married 23 years by the 1911 census, which puts the marriage at about 1888. The London Metropolitan Archives have a marriage on 28 May 1888 between George Downey, 28, father Charles Downey, carpenter, and Catherine Pooley, 23. This marriage was registered at Islington in Q2 1888 (1b/478). I think this must be the marriage of this George Downey but I don't understand why his wife's name is given and signed as Catherine - her birth apears in the BMD index as Caroline Elizabeth and she appears in the 1871 and 1881 censuses as Caroline E, in the 1891 census as Cary and in the 1901 and 1911 censuses as Caroline. Another mystery is that the 1888 marriage certificate shows the bride's father's name as John POOLEY when in fact it was Joseph POOLEY. I'm assuming that the correct name of George's wife was Caroline Elizabeth. The 1911 censuses indicates that George had 9 children but I've only identifed 8 of them. I haven't been able to work out what became of George and his wife and the 3 known sons.
