  Notes	1841 census: in Foxearth Street, Foxearth, Essex (all DOWNEY, all born Essex except Mary), John (47, ag lab), Mary (47), Charles (21, straw plaiter), Susan (19, ag lab), Jonathan (16, ag lab) and David (14, ag lab). 1851 census: in Church Street, Foxearth, Essex (all DOWNEY), John (head, 59, Chelsea pensioner, born Foxearth), Mary (wife, 56, seamstress, born Melford, Suffolk), Charles (son, 30, ag lab, born Foxearth), Jonathan (son, 26, ag lab, born Foxearth) and David (son, 24, ag lab, born Foxearth). 1861 census: in Street, Foxearth, Essex (all DOWNEY), John (head, 69, ag lab & pensioner, born Foxearth), Mary (wife, 67, born Melford, Suffolk) and David (son, 33, --last cutter, born Foxearth). It's very likely that in addition to the children mentioned in the above censuses John and Mary had a daughter called Elizabeth. The reason for thinking this is that the following 1871 census entry refers to Mary DOWNEY as the mother of Elizabeth WARD: 1871 census: in Foxearth, William WARD (57, rural post office messenger, born Foxearth), Elizabeth WARD (wife, 52, needlework, born Foxearth) and Mary DOWNEY (wife's mother, widow, 76, formerly needle woman, born Melford, Suffolk). This would put Elizabeth's birth at about 1819. She must have married William WARD before civil registration began. She appears with him in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses of Foxearth: they don't seem to have had any children.
