- 1930 United States Federal Census: in E Roumfort Road, District 613, Philadelphia. PA (both GILMORE, both born Pennsylvania), W Willis (head, 24, married at 24, electrical engineer at public utility) and Mildred M (wife, 25, married at 24, teacher at public school).
1940 United States Federal Census: at 24 Roumfort Road, District 462, Philadelphia. PA (all GILMORE, born Pennsylvania), Willis (head, 34, electrical engineer at electric firm*), Mildred (wife, 35), William (son, 9) and Virginia (daughter, 2).
* according to his daughter Virginia, her father "worked for the Philadelphia Electric Company his whole life, except for the war years when he was stationed here [in America] and overseas in England and Germany. My mother's diary from 1944 states that he was touring London on D-Day, but, of course, she did not know that until many weeks after the fact. He was also in the Battle of the Bulge, and his comment in a V-Mail letter understates the experience in an apology for not writing sooner -- "We've been busy." He was a Major with the PA 28th Division Artillery."
In January 2015 Virginia added "My dad was a man of few words. The 28th Division was on R&R when they got caught in the Battle of the Bulge that winter. At home, my mother had an emergency appendectomy in that same time frame. She was convinced that Dad was missing, and she would die on the operating table, thus leaving Bill and me orphans. So much for thinking the worst! Dad came out of the war with no injuries except for a broken tooth that he got playing a pick-up basketball game while waiting for the plane home! Mother was fine in a few weeks. Thanks to the Minter grandparents for taking care of Bill and me throughout the ordeal."
