| Notes |
- In addition to the children listed, George and Eliza had a son on 21 October 1848. I have his birth certificate, which doesn't show a forename. There is no other trace of this child. He doesn't seem to have been baptised.
1841 census: in Hearse Green, Brightlingsea, George (18, servant).
1851 census: in Spring Road, Brightlingsea, Eliza (25, wife of mariner). No trace of George, presumably at sea.
1861 census: in Spring Road, Brightlingsea, George G (38, fisherman), Eliza (36) and George (6).
1871 census: in Spring Road, Brightlingsea, Sarah BENNETT (70, widow, sweet shop keeper) and her grandson (step) Arthur Minter (5, scholar). In Sidney Street, Brightlingsea, another of George's children, Ernest (3) was staying with his stepmother-to-be Sarah HASTEAD (widow, 48, fruiterer & confectioner) and her 4 children Mercy (17), Grace (14), Moses (12) and Georgeanna (10). It's not clear what became of George's second wife Sarah Elizabeth OFFORD whom he married in 1867 - she doesn't appear in the 1871 census but there is no sign of her death being registered. George Golding himself was counted as master of the 'Centalie', described as widower, age 48.
1881 census: George was counted on the 'Dauntless' (a fishing smack registered at Colchester) at Southwick, Shoreham, Sussex. His wife of the 1873 marriage Sarah (58, born West Mersea, Essex) was still living in Sidney Street, Brightlingsea with 4 HASTEAD children, George (34, mariner, born Elmstead, Essex), Grace (24, machinist, born Elmstead, Essex), Moses F (22, mariner, born Elmstead, Essex) and Georgiana (20, born Elmstead, Essex) and Ernest Minter (13). The HASTEAD children are all described as "-- in law".
1891 census: in High Street, Brightlingsea, George (68, mariner) and Sarah (68).
1901 census: at 6 Hurst Green, Brightlingsea, George G (78, retired mariner) and Sarah (68).
