  Notes	1861 census: in Long Melford, Suffolk (all DOWNEY), David (28, jobbing man at iron foundry, born Melford), Sarah (29, horse hair weaver, born Sudbury) and Charles (nephew, 3, born Melford). 1871 census: in Westgate Street, Melford, Suffolk (all DOWNEY), David (36, fireman at iron foundry, born Melford), Sarah (35, horse hair weaver, born Melford) and Charles (son, 11, born Melford). It's unclear from the above whether Charles was David's son or not but I'm assuming (lacking a birth certificate) that he was in fact his son - the Charles Downey whose birth was registered at Sudbury in Q2 1857 (4a/416). Further thoughts in December 2019: I now think that Charles was the son of David's brother George. Firstly because the enhanced version of the BMD index shows Charles's mother's maiden name as ONG, and secondly because on the 1911 census, David's widow Sarah indicated that she'd had no children. 1881 census: in East Hall Street, Long Melford, Suffolk (both DOWNEY), David (49, labourer in iron works, born Melford) and Sarah (49, horse hair weaver, born Sudbury). David died in 1889. 1891 census: in Hall Street, Long Melford, Suffolk, Sarah DOWNEY (head, widow, 58, horse hair weaver, born Melford). 1901 census: in Hall Street, Melford, Suffolk, Sarah DOWNEY (head, widow, 71, born Long Melford). Also a visitor, Gertrude WATKINSON (10, born Long Melford). 1911 census: in Hall Street, Long Melford, Suffolk (3 rooms), Sarah DOWNEY (widow, 81, retired horse hair weaver, born Sudbury). Also Mary Ann MOTTERSOLE (niece, 8, school, born Melford).
