Roland Dale Young
Roland Dale Young, 80, passed away peacefully and joined his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at the UT Health Science Center in Tyler surrounded by his family. He fought a courageous battle against Parkinson's disease.
Roland was born on Oct. 24, 1929, in Jean to the late Willie Pierce and Ruth Myrtle (Murry) Young.
The family moved to Grand Prairie in 1942. Roland graduated in 1947 from Grand Prairie High School.
He served in the Army, Navy and Merchant Marine.
He was a loving and caring man and always put his family first. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and University of Texas Longhorns fan. He never thought twice about traveling to meet relatives and share in family celebrations and class reunions. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada.
He married Virginia Minter on Oct. 6, 1951, in Grand Prairie, and they made their home in Grand Prairie for the next 35 years. They raised two children, Roland Dale Jr. and Jennifer Gayle.
He retired with 37 years of service as an outside network lineman and PBX installer from Southwestern Bell Telephone (now AT&T) in 1984. He built their retirement home in 1986 in Oakland, and raised cattle and horses and enjoyed his retirement in the country. He loved to work on his tractor and build houses and shops. He loved watching his grandsons grow up. They moved to Tyler in 1999. Roland was a Methodist and a member of the Pollard United Methodist Church.
Roland leaves the following to cherish his memory: his wife of 58 years, Virginia, of Tyler; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Susan Young, of Wills Point; daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Bobby Dobbins, of Tyler; his brother and sister-in-law, Freddy and Pat Young, of Grand Prairie; three grandsons, Roland Young III, Nicklaus and Daniel Dobbins; and several nephews, nieces and many, many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Pierce Young, in 1989.
The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, Tyler.
Services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Pollard United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob Fisher, the Rev. Richard Luna and the Rev. Stephanie Scott officiating.
