- Joined the 3rd Ceylon Regiment as an ensign in 1811. Admitted as a freeman of Canterbury as a gentleman by copy of his father on 13 April 1824. Retired from the Army in 1844.
Served in Ceylon, East Indies, New South Wales and India. Lieutenant in the 45th Regiment of Foot at Rochester in 1830 - 31. Transferred to 20th Regiment of Foot in 1839 and later to the 28th Regiment from the 45th Regiment of Foot. Arrived at Sydney, Australia from Sheerness on 26 February 1840 on the ship 'Woodbridge' as Captain, 28th Regiment with 29 troops in charge of 229 male convicts and with wife and six children (report in 'The Australian' on 27 February 1840). A passenger in the ship 'Kelso' leaving Sydney on 19 June 1842 for Bombay with Mrs Minter and four children, Captain 28th Regiment (reported in 'The Australian' on 21 June 1842). Of his descendants, Master Minter (probably Robert Brownrigg) won prize for General Improvement at Sydney College (report in 'The Australian' on 16 December 1842). An Army Officer at Sydney in 1844.
A daughter, Anna M, was born in Sydney in 1841 but there is no trace of her subsequently so it's not clear whether she survived. September 2012: an email from Debbie Spiers gives the following information:

June 19-For Bombay, the ship Kelso, Captain Roxburgh, with govermment stores and troops, Passengers- Major Messiter, Captains Adams, Minter and Baumgartner, Lieutenants F.B. Russell, Cormick, and Aplin, Assistant Surgeon Alexander, Quartermaster Cox, Ensign Rawson, Mrs. Minter and four children, Mrs. Russell, Mrs. Cox, 236 rank and file 28th regiment, 18 women and 40 children.
(The four children with Mrs. Minter were their dtrs. Harriet, Adelaide, Ellen Rosalinda and Anna Maria. Three of whom died in India 1842-3: Adelaide died 24 Dec 1842, Anna Marie bur/died 24 Jan 1843 and Harriet died 1 Jun 1843. The death of Anna is reported below.)
The Bombay Almanac, Death Announcements lists:
"At Kurrachee, Anna Marie, infant daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Minter, H.M. 28th Regt. aged 15 months buried 24 Jan 1843."
Living at 4 Guildford Lawn, Ramsgate in 1849 and in 1851, a retired major with wife Emma (52) and daughter Ellen R (14, scholar at home) and a female servant.
Appeared in the 1849 South East Coast Directory and the 1849 Isle of Thanet Directory as Major George Minter, 4 Guildford Lawn, Ramsgate.
Appeared in the 1852 Post Office Directory of Kent (Kelly's) under Gentry, Maj. G Minter, 4 Guildford Lawn, Ramsgate.
Living at 2 Shrublands, Torquay in 1856 and 1857.
1861 census: living at 4 Keswick Buildings, Clifton, Bristol, aged 70, retired major, HM Service with wife Emma (62), grandson Charles J THOMPSON (12, scholar, born Longparish, Hants) and two female servants.
1871 census: living at 4 Keswick Buildings, Clifton, Bristol, aged 80, retired major, 20th Regiment, with wife Emma (72), grandsons Charles J THOMPSON (22, student Bristol Hospital, born Longparish, Hants), William THOMPSON (11, scholar, born Kolapore, India), a visitor and two female servants.

Will proved 5 May 1871. The Will of George Minter late of Keswick House Whiteladies-road in the City of Bristol Gentleman who died 5 April 1871 at Keswick House was proved at Bristol by Emma Minter of Keswick House Widow the Relict the sole Executrix. Effects under £8000.
