Notes |
- James Earley has found a document showing that Arthur was a member of the Royal Household Staff, employed as a sweeper in the stables. He started the job on 3 July 1902. He was 'living out' and received a lodging allowance of 7s 6d.
A further Royal Household document shows that Arthur, of the Royal Mews, joined the Royal Field Artillery on 4 January 1915 and acted as a sergeant on the Western Front and in the Balkans. [Later note: a copy of the record card showing the award of service medals is on Arthur's page at Minter Exchange.]
James comments "Reading through the records, Arthur ended up working in the Livery in London for the Royal Household and died whilst still working 31 January 1934."
When daughter Louisa Kathleen was baptised in March 1905 Arthur was an assistant storekeeper living at 4 Rawlings Street, Chelsea.
When his son Arthur Robert was baptised in March 1907 Arthur was a storekeeper living at 2 Cottage, Chelsea Park Dwellings. He was at the same address when son Thomas William was born in November 1907.
When his son Thomas William was baptised in 1910 Arthur was a stableman living at 1 Little Camera Street, Chelsea
1911 census: at No 1 Little Camera Street, Chelsea, London (2 rooms), Arthur (head, 29, married, stable man, worker, born India), Louisa (wife, 29, married 9 years, 4* children, 1 living 3 died, born North Woolwich) and Thomas (son, 3, born Chelsea, London).
Form signed Arthur Minter.
* I think this should read 5, 1 living, 4 died.
1921 census: at 46, Godfrey Street, Chelsea, London (all MINTER), Arthur (head, 38y 9m, married, born Madras, India (British born), carriage washer, Royal Mews), Louisa (wife, 39y 4m, married, born Woolwich, Essex) and Thomas (son, 13y 7m, born Chelsea, London, whole time school). Also Mary BRENNAN* (relationship not stated, 3y 10m, parents both alive, born Chelsea).
* Mary was Mary E BRENNAN, whose birth was registered in Q3 1917 at Chelsea (1a/459), with mother's maiden name KING.
In July 2024, in an email, Sarah Smythe wrote:
"Mary Brennan was the daughter of Louisa King and Robert James Brennan.
Mary was born at 46 Godfrey Street on 8 August 1917. Robert and Louisa were registered as living at 46 Godfrey Street at the time. Robert Brennan returned to Canada telling his family that Louisa had been killed in the bombings and they had a baby called Mary.
I have a copy of Mary's birth registry, she was my Grandmother....I think Louisa died around 1927, just before Arthur remarried."
Note by John Minter - I haven't found a record of Louisa's death.

- Married by banns. Thomas Minter, of age, bachelor, driver Royal Artillery, of Artillery Barracks, father William Minter, farmer. Ann Togwell, minor, spinster of Artillery Place, father William Togwell, waterman. Thomas signed, Ann marked. Witnesses James Wakefield and Hannah Sparrow both signed.
Thomas's army service record also notes his marriage details as taking place on 9 October 1865 at Woolwich, Kent. However, the witnesses' names are shown as Pte. William Minter and Pte William Togwell. The latter was probably Ann's brother, who would have been about 22 at the time of the marriage. Pte. William Minter's identity has yet to be established: it's unlikely to have been Thomas's father but if was Thomas's brother it may be a clue to Thomas's ancestry.
