  Notes	1861 census (indexed by ancestry.com as ASKINS): at Wood Street, Bapchild, Kent, James (43, ag lab), Hannah E (43), Edward J (6) and Elizabeth (4). 1871 census: at Ash Street, Ash, James, James (51, groom & gardener), Hannah E (53) and Edward J (16, ag. lab.). The 1861 census says that James was born in Ireland; the 1871 census says Teynham, Kent. James's younger brother was definitely born in Ireland (Belfast) which could lend crdence to James also having been born there. 1881 census: not found. James died in 1890. When the 1891 census was done, his widow Hannah, 72, was in the Faversham Union Workhouse. Her death was recorded in the Faversham RD in 1895 so maybe she ended her days in the workhouse. September 2013: email contact from Dr Neil Alderman, James Atkins' gg grandson. Neil has the family bible which gives dates for several members of the Atkins and Huckstep families. These dates have been used here. Neil says: "It was told in my family through my maternal grandmother Lilian May ROBINSON (nee HUCKSTEP) that James ATKINS and Hannah Elizabeth MINTER eloped to get married. The 1851 census does tell us that they were both residing at Upper Newlands Farm in Teynham working for John and Sarah LAKE as servants. Hannah and James were both unmarried and she worked as a cook and he was a groom (later as a groom and gardener)."
