| Notes |
- 1871 census: the following entry MAY refer to this Thomas Hobbs:
age 34, born Dover, gunner in the Royal Artillery stationed at Gun Wharf Barracks and Point Barracks, Portsmouth.
Henry Lowes Minter was born in the period between the death of Thomas Edward Minter and the date of Henry's mother's marriage to Thomas HOBBS. Elizabeth Amy was born after that date and was registered as HOBBS even though for some reason she used the surname MINTER.
No trace of Thomas Hobbs' death has been found. His supposed daughter Elizabeth Amy Hobbs' birth was registered in Q1 1882 yet at the 1881 census her mother Eliza was put down as Eliza Hobbs, widow! If Thomas was a soldier, it's possible that he was killed in action overseas.
