- Janet Webb has kindly sent me the following about her parents:
ALBERT GEORGE PLAYER AND IDA LOUISA NEE HALL
MYPARENTS
Albert George Player was born 31st March, 1914 the only surviving son
of Albert and Harriet Player at 28, Meason Road Stratford, West Ham,
Essex.
He had 1 older sister, Florrie Frances Player born 4th. July, 1909.
Ida Louisa Hall was born 12th July, 1912, the only child of Harry Frank
William and Bessie Hall at 26 Harman Street, Shoreditch, Middlesex.
Albert had volunteered to fight in the 2nd World War in 1939 when war
was declared on Germany, but was found unfit for active service, so he
joined the "Home Guard".
Ida and Albert were married 23rd. December, 1939 at West Ham Parish
Church. They lived at 4, Meason Road, Stratford until they were bombed
during the war when they moved in with Albert's parents at 24, Meason
Road. When Ida was pregnant with her first child (me), she was
evacuated out of London to stay with Albert's friend's family in Nuney-
Green, Berkshire where I was born 1941. Albert was a Shipping Clerk at
London Docks so stayed with his parents until they also were bombed.
Albert rented a flat at 1, Park Road, Manor Park, Wanstead and Ida
moved back to London in 1944 when my sister, Brenda Ann was born on
24th March.
Albert by now was a Director of Insurance for a car delivery company,
Car Collection headed by Mr Hunter.
The company moved its Head Office to Coventry in 1950 and Albert
moved his family to the Midlands. He rented a flat in Radford Road,
Leamington Spa where we stayed for 6 months until Albert bought a
house at 117, Kinross Road, Lillington for £299.00.
Albert lost his job in 1954 and started his own company "Player and West
Collections" with a friend of his, Fred West. Albert couldn't make the
new company work so his house was re-possessed and the family moved
into a rented flat at 24, Newbold Terrace, Leamington Spa.
Albert's company was "bought-ouf" by a larger competitor and Albert
was employed as an Insurance Director in the new job.
When Brenda and Janet moved out, Albert and Ida moved to another flat
at Riplingham Court, Leamington where they lived for about 20 years
before making their final move to 1, Vincent Street, Leamington Spa, a
"council property" .
Albert finally retired from work aged about 70. He developed Rectal
Cancer in 1994 and died in Myton Hospice on 28th. November, 1995
aged 80. He was cremated at Oakley Woods Crematorium.
Ida lived for another 14 months as his widow at the flat in Vincent Street
and died during the night of 13th. January,1996. She was aged 84 and
died of Congestive Cardiac Failure. She was cremated at Oakley Woods
and her ashes put with her husband's.
She frequently said to me that she knew Albert was still at home with her
and she saw him quite often during that last 14 months. She said "one
night, Janet, I will go to bed and your father will come for me". I like to
think he did!!
