| Notes |
- In 1831 when son George Alfred was baptised George was a cabinet maker of Adams Terrace. When George Alfred died, address was 33 Gerrard Street, Soho, London. It's not clear why George Alfred didn't appear on the 1841 census.
1841 census: in Gerrard Street, Soho, London George (35, upholsterer), Mary (35), Alice (15), Henry (4) and Mary (10 months). Also Alfred HOGG (15, upholsterer, born Scotland, Anne LINN (25, female servant, born Ireland, and Jane EPPS (30, independent means, not born Middlesex).
The Illustrated London News of 15 November 1845 carried an advertisement for "The Archimedean Screw Chair, Invented by G Minter, 33 Gerrard St, Soho"
1851 census: at 37 Frith Street, St Annes, Soho, London, George (47, upholsterer employing 6 men), Mary E (51), Edwin (18), Frederick W (15), both upholsterers, and Henry (13, scholar).
George appeared in a number of London Directories:

It seems that the business known as Minter & Co was sold in the mid-1850s to James Edward Stephens, for £2,800. Stephens later became bankrupt in Scotland and it was then revealed that he had committed large scale fraud whilst manager of the Eastern Banking Corporation. A report with much detail appeared in the NZ Lyttleton Times on 3 April 1858 (source http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=LT18580403.2.4&srpos=3010&e=-------50--2961----0minter--).
George's first wife died in 1856 and he remarried in 1857. In 1861 the property at 51 Frith Street was occupied by a young family called HILLIER and by a Richard P CHAPLIN, an invalid chair manufacturer, who had perhaps taken over George's business. George (57, a slate merchant(!), born Littlebourne(?)), Sarah (60) and George's son Frederick W (24, upholsterer) were living at 1 Merlin Cottages, St Johns, Margate.
In 1871 George (67, retired upholsterer) and Sarah (69) were still living at 1 Merlin Cottages. They were still there in 1881, aged 78 and 79 respectively, and their unmarried granddaughter, Sarah L WILLIAMS (16, born Margate) was living with them. In 1891 Sarah, now a widow, aged 89, living on her own means, was still at 1 Merlin Cottages, with her step-daughter Eliza M WILLIAMS (50, widow, living on own means, born St Annes, Soho) and her granddaughter Emily L WILLIAMS (29, unmarried, living on own means, born Chelsea, London).
Appeared in the Post Office Directory for Kent, 1878 as G Minter, Merlin Cottage, Ethelbert Road, Margate.
Appeared in Directory and Guide to the Isle of Thanet, 1884 - 85, Hutchings and Crowley Ltd as George Minter, 1 Merlin Cottages, Margate.
