| Notes |
- When Samuel married Annie Elizabeth SECRET in 1889, on his side the marriage was registered under Samuel Edward JOYCE and under Samuel E MINTER.
Correspondence with Ray Eyles in December 2007 has revealed that the Samuel Edward was in fact the illegitimate son of Eliza Minter, most probably she born Q1 1842, Christchurch, Southwark, Surrey. It's not known who Samuel Edward's father was but it could conceivably have been Robert JOYCE, with whom Samuel Edward was living as son at the time of the 1871 and 1881 censuses. And, as shown below, Robert JOYCE was living with Samuel Edward as the latter's father in 1901. Whoever Samuel Edward's father was, there seems no doubt that he was brought up as Robert JOYCE's son.
When Samuel Edward was born his mother Eliza was resident in the Union Workhouse, Colchester. At the 1861 census Eliza was living with her brother Charles. Later in 1861 she married John SKINNER (qv).
August 2019: A further puzzle concering Samuel's origin has come to light. findmypast.co.uk has a record in their collection 'Essex Baptism Index 1538-1920' for the baptism on 26 March 1871 at St Mary Magdelen, Colchester, of Samuel Edward Minter. He is shown as the son of Robert MInter, stone mason of St James Row, and Susannah.
I haven't worked out the significance of this.
1891 census: at 21 Albert Road, St Peter, Colchester, Samuel JOYCE (20, journeyman baker), Annie JOYCE (21, tailor's machinist) and Albert E JOYCE (6 months)
1901 census (indexed by ancestry.com as TOYER), at 8 Maidenhurst Street, Colchester, Samuel JOYCE (30, master baker), Anne JOYCE (30), Albert JOYCE (10), George JOYCE (8) and Frederick JOYCE (5). Living with them was Samuel's father Robert JOYCE, age given as 52 and married, a stone sawyer.
1911 census: at 8 Maidenhurst Street, Colchester, Essex (5 rooms), Samuel Edward (head, 40, married, baker, own a/c, born Colchester), Annie Eliz (wife, 40, married 21 years, 6 children, 5 living, 1 died), wife, born Colchester), George Harold (17, single, moulder & casemaker, worker, born Colchester), Frederick George (son, 16, single, born Colchester), Clifford Leonard (son, 9, born Colchester) and Claude Hamilton (son, 8 months, born Colchester).
Form signed Samuel Edward Minter.
