| Notes |
- Although he appeared as William on the 1881 (and probably the 1871) census, Mick Coomber (in July 2019) writes "According to his daughter Laura's marriage certificate in 1895 in Stepney he is shown as John William Bateman & his death is also recorded as John William March Q 1891 Thanet 2a 657 aged 35."
1871 census: the following probably refers to William:
Aboard the "Elijah" at Great Grimsby, Lincolnshre, William BATEMAN (15, cook and cabin-boy, born London, Middlesex). There were 4 other crew members including the master, Edwin GREEN (27, married, born Deptford, Kent).
The enhanced GRO index of births includes the registration of the birth of James MINTER in Q2 1873 (Thanet 2a/765), with mother's maiden name EMPTAGE. James's death was registered in Q3 1873 (Thanet 2a/441). Since Dorothy (nee EMPTAGE)'s Minter husband had died in 1871, this child was probably fathered by William BATEMAN.
I haven't found a marriage between Dorothy MINTER nee EMPTAGE and William BATEMAN. Mick Coomber writes (July 2019) "I also cannot find him married to Dorothy".
1881 census: in a cottage, back of 81 Plains of Waterloo, Ramsgate, William BATEMAN (25, fisherman, born London), Dorothy BATEMAN (30, fisherman's wife, born Ramsgate), Caroline A MINTER (10, scholar, born Ramsgate), Laura BATEMAN (4, scholar, born Ramsgate), William BATEMAN (2, born Ramsgate) and Maude M BATEMAN (8 months, born Ramsgate).
1891 census: at 3 Hibernia Street, Ramsgate (all born Ramsgate), Doretha BATEMAN (head, widow, 39, smack owner), Caroline MINTER (daughter, 19), Laura BATEMAN (daughter, 14), John W BATEMAN (son, 12, scholar), Maud M BATEMAN (daughter, 10, scholar), Rose J BATEMAN (daughter, 8, scholar), Mark F G BATEMAN (son, 6, scholar), Albert V BATEMAN (son, 4) and Lillian E BATEMAN (daughter, 1).
1901 census: at 3 Hibernia Street, Ramsgate (all BATEMAN, born Ramsgate), Dorothy (head, widow, 49, fishing net worker), Maud (daughter, 20, fishing net worker), William (son, 22, fisherman), Mark (son, 16, errand boy), Albert (son, 14, errand boy), Bertha (daughter, 13), Lillian (daughter, 11) and Ernest (son, 9).
