Admitted as a freeman of Canterbury on 20 July 1852 as a butcher by copy of his father.
1851 census: aged 22, a grocer, living at 42 Biggin Street, St Marys, Dover with his brother William and family.
1861 census: at 13 Fair Street South, Mile End Old Town, London, Robert 33, customs officer), Mary (28). Amelia (7, scholar), Madeline (6, scholar) and Eliza (4, scholar).
1871 census: at 5 Woolmore Street, Mile End Old Town, Robert (42, customs officer), Mary (37), Amelia (17), Madeline (16) and Ernest (6). Although registered as MINTON, it seems that Eliza (14) was a domestic servant at 8 White Lion Street, Norton Folgate, London.
1881 census: at 41 Walker Street, Limehouse, London, Robert (53, customs office, HMC), Mary (47) and Ernest (16, butcher).
1891 census: at 27 Harcombe Road, Stoke Newington, London, Robert T (65, customs office, HM Customs), Madeline M (57). In the same house but a separate household, Ernest (26, manager, unreadable) and Rosa (20).
Post Office Directory 1894 & 1898 has Robert Minter, 27 Harcombe Road, Stoke Newington, London.
1901 census: at 27 Harrowbeck(?) Road, Stoke Newington, Robert Torrens (72, pensioner, HM Court(?!) Office) and Madeline Mary (67).
1911 census: living with son Ernest (qv).
