| Notes |
- Deaf and dumb from birth.
Harriet's first census appearance is in 1841 when she was living in Highbridge Street, Waltham Abbey, Essex. Aged 35, she lived in the same house as John and Caroline Mitchell and their son Henry. Next door was a Joseph Mitchell, 70, and a Harriet Mitchell, 60, probably his wife.
10 years later in 1851, Harriet Minter, now 51, a pauper born in Edmonton, was living in Crossbrook Street, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire with her aunt Harriet Mitchel (one l), 76, widow, said to have been born in Kingston, Kent. Also there was another niece, Maria Small, unmarried, 28, born in Canterbury and a visitor, Ann Maria Small, 6, born in Paddington (probably Maria Small's daughter). Harriet Minter was said to have been deaf and dumb from birth.
In 1861, Harriet, now 60, was still living in Crossbrook Street with her aunt Harriet Mitchel, now 86, a proprietor of houses, born Kingston, Kent. But a second Minter had joined them, Jane Minter, aged 45, born Edmonton, also deaf and dumb from birth; and Maria Small and her daughter were still living there. Harriet Minter probably died aged 69 in Q2 1870. Jane appears in 1871 (aged 64) and 1881 (aged 71) as a lodger in College Road, Cheshunt and in 1891, aged 83, apparently living alone in Crossbrook Street; she probably died in Q1 1892 (Edmonton 3a/357)."
