      1911 census: at Girling Villa, Sudbury (9 rooms), Thos DOWNEY (head, 54, married, salesman (hardware), born Hinckley, Leicestershire), Rose DOWNEY (wife, 43, married 24 years, 8 children 7 living 1 dead, born Long Melford), Archie DOWNEY (son, 21 single, gardener, born Long Melford), William DOWNEY (son, 14, school, born Long Melford), Rose DOWNEY (daughter, 12, school, born Long Melford), Fred DOWNEY (11, school, born Long Melford), 'Elsia' DOWNEY (daughter, 3, born Sudbury), Will BAILES (boarder, 29, married 4 years 2 children 1 living 1 dead, cinematograph operator, born Stockton Tees), Nissim NATHANOFF (lodger, 29, single, traveller, born Bulgaria) and Thomas POLLOCK (lodger, 53 married 19 years, 5 children, traveller, born Lanark, Scotland)

      The picture above is a strange one! Rose Downey married Alfred WOODGATE in 1895: at that time, if the 1891 and 1901 censuses are accurate, she already had a son Archie and two daughters Florence and Maud. By 1901 she is living with Thomas LANGHAM but since 1895 has had 3 more children all registered with the surname WOODGATE but with middle names LANGHAM. In 1911, all the surnames appear as DOWNEY, even Thomas LANGHAM's.

      The marriage of Alfred and Rose didn't last long - he appears in the 1901 census living back with his parents in Acton, Suffolk. He is shown on the 1901 census form as married (see Alfred's father's Notes for full details). The 1911 census form shows Alfred WOODGATE, 44, "married living apart" - he was living with his brother Ruben (42) and nephew Herbert STEARNS in Acton, Suffolk.

      There are several unanswered questions including:
      - where did Thomas LANGHAM spring from? I can't find him in censuses before 1901.
      - why were some of Rose's children given the surname WOODGATE and a middle name LANGHAM?
      - how significant is it that the 1911 census says that Rose had been married 24 years and had had 8 children from the marriage?
      - why was everyone in the 1911 census called DOWNEY?
