- Both Thanet and his wife were staunch Methodists. Isabella's pedigree back to 1520 in Longforgan, Scotland is known to descendant Mrs M K Clarke, 23 Ernest Road, Bedhampton, Hants.
Living with parents at Butchery Lane, Canterbury in 1841, a butcher. Moved to Newchurch, Ryde, Isle of Wight with brother Edward in 1842 and associated with him at 33/34 Pier Street as dairyman and hiring out bathing machines. Made a vow never to return to the mainland which he kept.
1851 census: lodging with the Smith family at 7 High Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, aged 28, unmarried, a master dairyman employing 1 man.
Had 84 acres of farmland at Aldermoor Farm, Upton Road (Bettesworth Road). Became dairy farmer on his own account taking over entire business where what was later Argyll Street, Argyll Place and Arthur Street, No 7 Arthur Street being the site of the dairy.
1861 census: in Newchurch, Ryde, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, Thanet Hodges (36, dairyman), Isabella (31), William (7, scholar), Ernest T (4) and Alexander (2). Also there were Janet PRAIN (57, visitor, married) and John PRAIN (19, boarder, apprentice cabinet maker).
1871 census: at Anster Cottage, Arthur Street, Ryde, Thanet Hodges (45, dairyman), Isabella (40, dairyman's wife), Ernest T (14, scholar), Alexander (12, scholar) and Charles Prain (6, scholar). In the house next door, Dundee Cottage, lived the PRAIN family: William (74, superannuated coastguard), Janet (68), Janet Laing (38, dressmaker), Robert Laing (31, tailor), John (27, carpenter) and Jane Elizabeth (25, dressmaker).
1881 census: at 38 Arthur Street, Ryde, Thanet H (56, master dairyman employing 2 men and 1 boy), Isabella (51), Ernest T (24) and Charles P (16). Still living next door, at 39 Arthur Street, was Janet PRAIN (77, now a widow) and 3 unmarried children, Jessy L (47, income from house), Robert (41, tailor, unemployed) and Jane E (35, dressmaker).
1891 census: still at 38 Arthur Street, Thanet H (67, retired dairyman), Isabella (61) and Ernest T (34, grocer). Next door were Janet L PRAIN (57) and Jane E PRAIN (45), unmarried and living on their own means.
1901 census: still at 38 Arthur Street, Thanet H (77, retired dairyman), Isabella (71) and Ernest T (44, grocer). Next door were John PRAIN (59, retired carpenter, unmarried), Janet PRAIN (67) and Elizabeth PRAIN (56), unmarried and living on their own means.
1911 census: still at 38 Arthur Street (5 rooms), Thanet Hodges (head, 87, married, no occupation, born Canterbury), Isabella (wife, 81, married 58 years, 4 children, all living, born Anstruther, Fife) and Ernest Thanet (son, 54, single, grocer, employer, born Ryde, IoW).
