| Notes |
- The following was written by Gail Gniewosz and explains how convicts fit into the Australian family tree.
Martin George Minter (1838-1923) married Rosanna Devlin, illigitimate daughter of William Small ( 1828-1905) and Margaret Devlin (Irish Orphan Scheme).
(Interestingly, familysearch.org's collection Australia, Marriages, 1810-1980 gives the name of the mother of Martin & Rosannah's son Ernest Minter as Rose Ann KERRISON.
William Small's parents were Thomas Small (1788-1863) and Priscilla Mason Squire (1792-1862).
Thomas Small was the son of John Small (1761-1850). He was on the First Fleeter. Arrived on the Charlotte 1788. His mother was Mary Parker (1758-1824). First Fleet also. Arrived on the Lady Penrhyn.
Priscilla Mason Squire was the daughter of James Squire 1754-1822). First Fleet. Arrived on the Friendship/Charlotte. And Elizabeth Mason (1759-1809). She arrived on the ship Mary Ann (3rd Fleet). Priscilla Mason Squire had previously been married to a Arthur Devlin - a political prisoner from Ireland. There could have been some relationship between Margaret Devlin and Arthur Devlin but we don't know. Margaret and her sister worked for Thomas and Priscilla Small.
The Small family became wealthy farmers in the Kempsey district - they were the first cedar getters and sailed the first ship up the Clarence river. William Small married a young lady shortly before Rosanna's birth. Margaret Devlin was taken to a home in Sydney by the Irish Orphan Assoc to give birth, meanwhile William Small married a girl from the "Upper Class". Margaret was paid 50 pound to cover her costs in Sydney. She had previously had a son to this William Small but the child died shortly after birth in an orphanage in Sydney.
