James Sr. is mentioned in Tithables List for Amelia County, VA. in 1736. (later Prince Edward County, VA.) Name spelled Gravelet or Gravelette.
James was an overseer for the Joseph and William Ligon plantation of Henrico County, VA.
He bought 100 acres on Sandy River in 1738 which he and Ann sold to Joseph Ligon in 1741.
James' name is on a Will that year in Amelia County (24 April 1741) in the Thomas Rutledge inventory.
He was a witness for Robert Browns' Will 1745/46. James "Gravilly" patented 114 acres in 1754.
He is listed in VIRGINIA HEADS OF FAMILIES 1758.
James Sr. or James Jr. patented 4 tracts of land totaling 1600 acres between 1760-67.
1761 - first of several land entries on Sandy River in what became Prince Edward County, VA. with Gravelet and 1762 sold Sandy River tract in Prince Edward County, VA.
1765 - in Halifax County, VA. (later Pittsylvania County) he was exempted from tax probably because of old age.
1772 - sold land in Prince Edward County, VA.
1779- sued in Prince Edward County, VA.
1782- James Jr. has 7 white people in family on Census.
