| Notes |
- Baptised privately as the daughter of James (carpenter) and Mary Wathen of 50 Stokes Croft. But birth registration not found.
May 2023: Tim Murphy found the relationship between Caroline and John Henry TINSLEY. In May 2023, Tim was trying to find out why, on her daughter Emily Rose's death certificate, Caroline's name is shown as Caroline Mary RADFORD rather than WATHEN or TINSLEY.
Caroline was the daughter of James WATHEN, whose younger brother Charles, born in Ireland, became Mayor of Bristol and was knighted in 1889.
A very informative narrative about the WATHEN family is at http://www.mikesclark.com/genealogy/wathen.html.
It's not clear what became of Caroline's father but her mother died in 1856 and in the 1861 census Caroline and her brother James were living with their widowed grandmother Mary WATHEN in Bedminster, Bristol.
On 1 November 1865 Caroline, aged 16, a domestic servant, left Plymouth for Adelaide, South Australia on the 'Salamanca'. She and other emigrants paid 10 shillings for her passage. Caroline's conduct on the voyage was judged to be 'very good'.
September 2023: research by Tim Murphy led to the following from Eva Rivera, Records & Archives Officer at the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, Melbourne:
"Our records confirm that Caroline Wathen was 49 years old when she died at the Melbourne Hospital. Her birthplace was given as England and interestingly, she was noted to be a Spinster.
Caroline was buried on 24th September 1900 at Melbourne General Cemetery – Church of England Compartment HH.
Unfortunately, this is a Public Burial Area and therefore the exact grave location for Caroline will not be marked with a headstone/plaque making it very difficult to identify above ground."
