    Notes 
    • Aged 24, a viewer (mechanic) working for Hoffmans, Chelmsford, Claude joined the Essex Regiment on 8 August 1914. He gave his address as Heybridge, Maldon. Service no. 281025. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 24 December 1915. Served in the BEF from July 1916. Awarded the Military Medal. Next of kin father C Minter, mother Kate Minter, brother Bert Minter, all of Heybridge, Maldon. Wounded twice in 1917. Caught influenza in France in Febraury 1919 (part of the flu epidemic); spent time in hospital in Oxford but not judged to be disabled as a result of war service. Demobilized on 2 April 1919.

      * still operating today, as Crittall Windows; originated in Braintree in 1849 but no longer a family-owned company
