They show that Samuel enlisted in the Norfolk Regiment on 29 May 1883 giving his age as 19 years 2 days, occupation brickmaker, birthplace St Pauls, Norwich. He was discharged on 28 May 1895 having served time in India (1884 - 88) and Burmah (1888 - 90), gaining the India Medal and clasp 1887-89.

At the time of his discharge Samuel gave his next of kin as his father Samuel of New Catton, Norwich and his intended place of residence as 3 Stone Arch, New Catton, Norwich.

This establishment consisted of only 7 rooms and besides the 11 lodgers there were the head of the household William Bailey (a shoemaker), his wife, their teenage son and his sister-in-law.
Samuel enlisted in the Norfolk Regiment again, now aged 45 years 285 days, a brickmaker, on 10 September 1914. He transferred to the Suffolk Regiment on 26 August 1916. Next of kin father Samuel and mother Mary Ann Minter of Stone Arch, New Catton, Norwich.
On 27 May 1919, now aged 54 years 9 months, Samuel signed on again, this time for the Royal Engineers. His occupation was labourer and address 4 Stone Arch, New Catton, Norwich. He was discharged on 8 May 1920, address now 6 Stone Arch, New Catton, Norwich. He spent most of this period of service in France.
