Notes |
- Edward adopted the surname MINTTER when he married in 1872 (as did his mother when she re-married in the same quarter). Several of Edward's children were registered as MINTTERs but the eccentric spelling was not used when censuses were taken and was eventually abandoned.
November 2007: David Farrar writes:
"I have a theory about the change of spelling to Mintter. All the documents that I have seen which have been signed by Minters of generations prior to my grandfather (Leonard Clarence Mintter) were signed with their mark and witnessed. My grandfather was always very proud of his reading and writing, and I believe that he and his siblings were the first generation who could read and write. What I think happened is that after the move to Canning Town a document was filled in by a third party who spelt Minter with 2 T's and the mistake was carried on. All the documents I have come across from my grandfather's birth certificate on show the altered spelling."
1881 census: at Long Row, St Clement Without, Norwich, Edward (31), brickmaker, Rosa (27), Rosa (7), Edward (3) and Ellen (2).
November 2007: David Farrar writes: "Edward Minter, Rosina Rix and their older children moved from Norfolk to Canning Town, East London in 1889 or 1890 when Edward got a job as a stoker in the local gas works. References to some of the younger children being born in Plaistow refer to the location of the local hospital, which is about 2 miles from Canning Town."
1891 census: at 20 Tyas Road, West Ham, London, Edward (40), dock labourer, Rosina (37), Edward (13), errand boy, Elenor [Ellen] (12), Eliza (9), Fred (7), Arthur (3) and Herbert (1).
1901 census: at 5 Beatrice St, West Ham, Edward (51), gas worker, Rose (48), Fred (17), junior salesman, Arthur (13), draper's porter, Herbert (11), Maud (8) and Leonard (2).
1911 census: at 5 Beatrice St, Plaistow, London, Edward (head, 61, married 39 years, gasworks fireman, gasmaking, worker, born Rack--, Norfolk), Rosina (wife, 58, married, no. of years left blank, 12 children, 9 living 3 died, born Norwich, Norfolk), Arthur (son, 23, single, warehouseman, cotton manufacturer, worker, born Sprouston, Norfolk) and Leonard (son, 12, school boy news boy, born Plaistow, West Ham).
