  Notes	Note: when he married Sophia WELCH in 1844, John was shown in the register as a widower. I haven't found an earlier marriage but a 26 year-old Susan SMEED of Drummond Crescent was buried at St Pancras on 12 November 1843. It seems likely that John and Susan were the parents of a son, Richard John SMEED, whose birth was registered in Q3 1842 at St Pancras (1/303) and death in Q1 1843 at St Pancras (1/285). 1841 census: in Drummond Crescent, Somers Town, St Pancras, Middlesex, William WELCH (30, baker, not born in Middlesex). Sarah WELCH (20, born in Middlesex) and William WELCH (2, born in Middlesex). Seemingly at the same location but possibly as a separate household were Caroline SPARKS (20, independant, born in Middlesex), John SMEED (20, baker's assistant, not born in Middlesex), Charles WELCH (20, journeyman baker, not born in Middlesex) and possibly 3 other people. 1851 census (indexed and recorded as SMEAD): at 35 Drummond Crescent, Somers Town, St Pancras, Middlesex, John (head, 29, baker, born Egerton, Kent), Sophia (wife, 35, born Hythe, Kent) and Sophia (daughter, 5, born St Pancras). Also Frances WELCH (mother in law, widow, 72, born Ashford, Kent), a visitor, Edward THOMPSON, and a servant, journeyman baker William WINSLIPP (singlem 42, born Somersetshire). 1861 census: at 35 Drummond Crescent, Somers Town, St Pancras, Middlesex, John SMEED (head, 39, baker employing 1 man, born Egerton, Kent), Sophia SMEED (wife, 46, born Hythe, Kent) and Sophia (daughter, 15, scholar, born St Pancras). Also a visitor, Eliza SMEED, single, 25, born Middlesex). 1871 census: at 35 Drummond Crescent, Somers Town, St Pancras, Middlesex, John SMEED (head, 49, baker, born Egerton, Kent) and Sophia SMEED (wife, 56, born Hythe, Kent). Also Robert C MINTER (son in law, 28, railway clerk, born Pancras, Middlesex), Sophia MINTER (daughter, 25, born Pancras, Middlesex), Alice MINTER (granddaughter, 5, born Pancras, Middlesex), Percy MINTER (grandson, 3, born Pancras, Middlesex) and Herbert MINTER (grandson, 5 months, born Pancras, Middlesex). 1881 census: at 35 Drummond Crescent, Somers Town, St Pancras, London John SMEED (59, baker employing 1 man, born Egerton, Kent) and Sophia SMEED (66, born Hythe, Kent). Also Sophia MINTER (daughter, 35), Robert MINTER (son in law, 38, clerk), Alice MINTER (granddaughter, 15), Percy MINTER (13, scholar) and David S MINTER [presumably Harry Sidney] (5, scholar). Grandson Herbert John MINTER (10) was at a school in Ipsden, Oxfordshire. John died before the 1891 census. 1891 census: still at 35 Drummond Crescent, St Pancras, London, Sophia SMEED (76, baker), Robert C MINTER (48, railway clerk), Sophia MINTER (45), Herbert J MINTER (20, billiard worker or marker) and Harry S MINTER (15, chemist's assistant). No trace of Percy. Sophia died before the next census.
