Notes |
- 1841 census: in Rahn's Court, St Mary, St George, Middlesex (all DONALD, all born in Middlesex.), Edward (30, journeyman butcher), Elizabeth (25), Edward (7), [indecipherable] (prob. 5) and Frederick (2).
The indecipherable entry was a male and judging from the 1851 census was probably for George.
Rahn's Court was a tiny enclave sandwiched between rows of small houses. It was in census enumeration district 15 in the Parish of St Mary, part of St George Middlesex. District 15 was itself very small but contained dozens of small terraced houses. An O.S. map of 1875 shows the area very clearly (see Minter Exchange).
By 1851 Edward's family had grown and they had moved several miles west to an area just north of where Temple Bar becomes Fleet Street. The 1875 O.S. map suggests a less crowded area but Apollo Court was again an enclave between buildings. No. 4 Apollo Court was an address shared by 6 households. By 1851 Edward was still a butcher but no longer described as a journeyman.
1851 census: at 4 Apollo Court, St Dunstan in the West, Middlesex (London) (all DONALD), Edward (head, 43, butcher, born Shoreditch), Elizabeth (wife, 41, born Shoreditch), George (son, 14, scholar, born Bethnal Green), Frederick (son, 11, scholar, born Bow, Middlesex), Eliza (daughter, 9, scholar, born St George East), James (son, 8, scholar, born Bethnal Green) and John (son, 6, born Bethnal Green).
Edward's wife's death at age 50 was registered at Bethnal Green in Q1 1860. Some time between 1851 and 1861 Edward evidently moved back east:
1861 census: at 16 Gloucester Gardens, Bethnal Green (all DONALD), Edward (head, widower, 53, butcher, born Middlesex), Frederick W (son, unmarried, 22, carman, born Middlesex), Eliza P (daughter, 19, no occupation, born Middlesex), and John (son, 15, no occupation, born Middlesex).
Edward's son George appears to have left home before 1861 and for some reason to have adopted the name Frederick McDONALD - see his Notes.
1871 census: Edward DONALD (widower, 63, butcher, born Shoreditch) was living at 11 Walker Street, Bromley St Leonard, London with his daughter Eliza who was now married to George J STEDMAN.
1881 census: unfortunately for Edward, his life drew to a close in the the Holloway Workhouse in Islington, London. He was listed there as Edward DONALD, widower, 75. butcher, born London. He died later in 1881.

| Edward Donald 1808 - 1881 Ordnance Survey map showing the area of St George in the East, London where Edward Donald lived when the 1841 census was done. The area was surveyed in 1873 and seems not to have changed significantly since the census. Edward, his wife and three children lived in Rahn's Court (highlighted), a small enclave sandiched between rows of houses and accessed from Church Lane, which runs from north to south about the center of the map. |
