| Notes |
- There are questions surrounding this individual. He appears to have been called George when he was christened and appeared as George on many censuses (see below). But he appears to have married as Frederick William DONNELL and in the 1911 census is shown as Frederick DONALD. His death in 1913 appears in the BMD index as Frederick W DONALD, aged 71 This is particularly strange given that George's younger brother was named Frederick William. Neither I nor Wendy Hadley, who has investigated, can understand all this.
1841 & 1851 censuses: living at home - see father's Notes.
1861 census: it's thought that George appears in the 1861 census as Frederick McDONALD, aged 24, a mariner "born in Apollo Court, Middlesex", living as a lodger with Dinah JARVIS, a widow with 4 children, in Queenborough, Kent. If this was indeed George DONALD, not only is the name wrong but so is the birthplace - Apollo Court was where George was living in 1851, certainly not where he was born.
Had George already met his wife-to-be by 1861, which might explain why he'd moved to Queenborough, Emma's home town?
1871 census: at 14 South Street, Queenborough, Kent (all DONALD), George (head, 32, fisherman, born London), Emma (wife, 25, born Queenborough), George (son, 7, scholar, born Queenborough), Elizabeth (daughter, 5, scholar, born Queenborough), Francis (son, 3, born Queenborough) and Edward (son, 11 months, born Queenborough).
On the same page, at 12 South Street, lived Henry EDWARDS (head, 68, --- parochial relief ---, born Queenborough), his wife Clemetine (61, charwoman, born Queenborough) and son James Alfred (19, mariner fisherman, born Queenborough). It seems likely that Henry was related to George DONALD's wife Emma, who was Emma EDWARDS before she married George.
1881 census: at 45 High Street, Queenborough, Kent (all DONALD, all born Queenborough except George), George (head, 43, fisherman, born London), Emma (wife, 36), George Edward (son, 17, fisherman), Elizabeth E (daughter, 15, no occupation), Francis H (son, 13, scholar), Edward (son, 11, scholar), Bertram (son, 9, scholar), Frederick William (son, 6, scholar), Shelvey J (son, 4, scholar) and Arthur (son, 1, scholar (sic)).
1891 census: at 45 High Street, Queenborough, Kent (all DONALD, all born Queenborough except George), George (head, 53, fisherman, born London), Emma (wife, 46), Frank (son, 22, sailmaker), Bertram (son, 18, fisherman), Frederick (son, 16, general labourer), Shelby (son, 14, general labourer), Arthur (son, 11, scholar), Harry (son, 9, scholar) and Sidney (son, 6, scholar).
1901 census: at 149 High Street, Queenborough, Kent (all DONALD, all born Queenborough except George), George (head, 63, mariner, born St Dunstan, London), Emma (wife, 56), Spelvey? (son, 24, general labourer), Arthur (son, 21, general labourer), Harry (son, 19, general labourer) and Sidney (son, 16, commercial clerk).
1911 census: at 101 High Street, Queenborough, Kent (8 rooms) (all DONALD, all born Queenborough except Frederick [George]), Frederick (sic) (head, 74, retired mariner, born Bethnal Green, London), Emma (wife, 65, married 47 years, 10 children, 8 living, 2 dead), Arthur (son, 31, single, cement labourer at cement works) and Henry (son, 29, single, ships stevedore for Lloyds Co). Also a lodger, Thomas YELDHAM (22, single, preventive man, HM Customs, born London).
George died (registered as Frederick W) in 1913.
1921 census: at 9, Railway Terrace, Queenborough, Kent: Emma DONALD (widoe, 76, no occupation, born Queenborough) and her son Henry Richard DONALD (39, stevedore, born Queenborough) were with George Frederick DONALD (57y 5m, born Queenborough, pile drivering, coke wharf) and his wife Adelaide Jane (48y 3m, born Shoreditch, home duties).
Emma died in 1923.
