  Notes	The identity of John's parents hasn't been established . The first documented appearance of John I've found (thanks to Wendy Hadley's research) is the following: 1861 census: in Luddesdown Street, Luddesdown, Kent (all LESTER, all said (inaccurately) to have been born in 'N/K', Cambridgeshire) John (head, 36, railway labourer), Hannah (wife, 37), John (son, 10, scholar) and Hannah (daughter, 5, scholar). 1871 census: in Luddesdown Street, Luddesdown, Kent (all LESTER) John (head, 48, plate layer on rail head, born Upwood, Cambridgeshire), Sarah* (wife, 47, born Ely, Cambridgeshire) and Han[n]ah (daughter, 16, born Chaddel [Chadwell], Essex). * Sarah is presumably the same person as 1861's Hannah. 1881 census: in Luddesdown Street, Luddesdown, Kent (all LESTER) John (head, 50 (sic), plate layer on railrode, born Cambridge), Sarah (wife, 51 (sic), born Cambridge) and William (grandson, 9, born Luddesdown, Kent). William was probably daughter Hannah's illegitimate son - he appeared with her on the 1891 census as William John L RAYNER. Neither Wendy Hadley nor I can find the deaths of John and Hannah/Sarah.
