- The marriage between Albert and Annie TEBBUTT provides a link to the family tree of Steve Irwin on Genes Reunited. The inclusion of Annie and the couple's family is the result of correspondence with Steve in 2005. Steve suggested that Albert was a merchant seaman, which might explain why he cannot be found in the 1891 census. Albert's marriage certificate of 1896 however gives his occupation as 'conductor' but does give his age as 24 and his father's name as William, a joiner, both of which facts tie in with Albert E Minter born 1872 son of William and Catherine Minter. Less easy to see is how Albert came to be living in Hunslet, Yorkshire in 1896 and even more mystifying is why, if he was the son of William and Catherine, he would have said in 1901 that he was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. For the time being however, it is assumed that the Albert who married Annie Tebbutt was the Albert born in 1872 in Boyton.
National School Admission Registers & Log-books 1870-1914 Transcription (findmypast.co.uk):
Albert, born 27 August 1872 of Boyton, father William, carpenter, was admitted to a school in California, Ipswich on 13 April 1885 and left on 28 July 1885
1901 census: at 8 Pepper Place, Hunslet, Yorkshire, Albert (28, labourer, steel works, born Sheffield), Annie (23), Ernest (3) and William (4 months).
Albert's occupation and address, as shown on his childrens' birth certificates:
26 December 1897: tramcar conductor, 4 Ashton Terrace, Hunslet
23 November 1900: general labourer, 8 Pepper Place, Hunslet
28 April 1902: general labourer, 7 Whitfield Street, Hunslet
20 August 1906: plasterer's labourer, 3 Henslow Road, Ipswich
Albert and Annie may have been the parents of Maud Violet whose birth was registered at Leeds in Q4 1905. This might be confirmed by the 1911 census but as of February 2009, working only from the index, it would appear that, probably as a result of Annie's death in 1908, the family was not all together. An entry for Ethel (9) and Sydney (5) has been found at Woodbridge but it remains to be seen who they lived with.
March 2009: Steve Irwin has now looked at the 1911 census and has found:
1. Ethel Minter (9, born Leeds, Yorkshire) and Sydney Minter (5 born Ipswich, Suffolk) were staying with their uncle, Alfred GOODERHAM (head, 56, farm labourer, born Braiseworth, Suffolk) and aunt (Jane GOODERHAM, 54, married 20 years, no children, born Palgrave, Suffolk) at Rushmere St Andrew, Suffolk. The house had four rooms. Jane Gooderham signed the census form.
Jane was the eldest child of William and Catherine Minter: the fact that she was shown as the aunt of Ethel and Sydney indicates that their father was Jane's brother and removes any doubt that Albert E Minter was the son of William and Catherine Minter.
2. Ernest Minter (13, at school, born Leeds, Yorkshire) was living at 21 Hall Street, Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire with his TEBBUTT grandparents William (67, general labourer at steel works, born Benneffield, Northampton) and Elizabeth (65, married 42 years, 8 children, 7 surviving), born Glapthorne, Northampton. Their sons James Henry (39) and Albert (31) also lived there, in a 3 roomed house. Ernest is shown as 'nephew', after the form had been amended.
July 2009: email from Pip Kedge:
"I attach a copy of a marriage certificate for Albert Minter and Marian Kipling whom Albert married in 1919 - this would be his second marriage. Within 10 years she had re-married a Thomas Williamson marrying Dec 1930 in Middlesborough and she had 4 children by him - Thomas W 1931 Margaret 1932 Moira L 1934 Kenneth 1936 all Yorkshire. There was a child Katherine Minter 1920 bn to Albert and Marian in Woodbridge Dist but probably Walton. It is believed that Katherine married Alfred R Bramham Dec 1939 North Allerton. The reason I looked for him is that he seemed to have gone into the mist for some time after Annie Tebbutts death - but now there is the problem as to why his wife Marian re-married ten years later - where was Albert - had he died at sea - divorced??? - or just went their separate ways - any ideas?"
This is an interesting discovery and I have no idea how Marian came to be free to marry again in 1930.
July 2011: At the time of daughter Ethel's marriage, Albert was said to be deceased, previously a ship cook. So perhaps Albert died at sea which would explain why I can't find a death registration for him.
It seems likely that Marian's relationship with Thomas Williamson started around 1925/6. There were 6 children registered in either Middlesbrough or Gateshead between 1926 and 1936, all with surname Williamson, mother's maiden name Kipling. Although none of the birth certificates have been see, all 6 are assumed to be Marian and Thomas's children.
September 2011: Pip Kedge reports that Sue Claydon has discovered that in 1925 (the official document (at FindMyPast) is stamped 27 February) Albert requested a copy of his navy service and discharge record, having lost the original. So he must have been alive at the time. It would appear that Albert was on the 'Villavia'
September 2011: Pip has now found that the ship was the 'Vellavia'. The website http://7seasvessels.com/?p=25263 includes a picture and gives the following history of the ship. Albert could have died anywhere on the routes taken.
Completed 6/1918, 52729, by Armstrong Whitworth, Newcastle (933) as WAR SETTER for the Shipping Controller (Cairns, Noble), GBR
1919 VELLAVIA, Cunard Steam-Ship Company, GBR
1926 RIVER TIGRIS, American-Levant Line, London, GBR
1931 INES CORRADO, 'Corrado' S.A. di Nav., Genova, ITA
To Argentine state from 25/8/1941
1942 RIO DIAMANTE, Flota Mercante del Estado, Argentina, ARG
1946 reverted to Italian owners as INES CORRADO, ITA
Broken up at Tokyo, arrived 16/4/1959.
February 2023: since all of the above was written, the 1921 census has become available. It shows Albert Minter, 49, married, born Boyton, a ships fireman, living as 'visitor' with the CLAYDON family: James William (head, 47y 11m, married, born North Ormesby, Yorks, a labourer with B.V. & Co), Jane Ann (wife, 43y 6m, married, born Rosedale, Yorks), Ada Winifred (daughter, 17y 1m, single, born South Bank, Yorks) and Alice (daughter, 9y 1m, born South Bank, Yorks, whole-time school).
I haven't found Marian in the 1921 census. I haven't found a connection between James William CLAYDON and other Claydons related to the Boyton Minters.
