Notes |
- 1841 census: in Keresforth Hill, Barnsley, Yorks (all RAYNER) John (30, toll bar keeper), Martha (24), Mary (6), "N.K", male, 1 month) and Mary (54). All were born in Yorkshire although the 'Y' beside Martha's name appears to have been altered in some way, possibly to 'N'.
"N.K" was possibly John, whose death aged 1, was registered in Q4 1842. Mary aged 54 was probably John's mother.
A lot seems to have happened in the years before the next census:
- John's first wife Martha was replaced by Frances, who married John in 1842. I haven't discovered what became of Martha or daughter Mary.
- John's occupation changed from toll-keeper to pork butcher. This transition was tracked as his children were baptised (see their records).
1851 census: in Queens Street, Barnsley (RAYNER except as indicated), John (head, 39, pork butcher & bacon factor, born Havercroft, Yorks), Frances (wife, 31, born Cawthorne, Yorks), Henry (son, 10, scholar, born Kexborough, Yorks), John (son, 8, scholar, born Barnsley) and Elizabeth (daughter, 3, scholar, born Barnsley). Also Joseph CHAMBERS (nephew, 15, shop boy, born Selby, Yorks), Eliza BEAUMONT (niece, 15, house servant, born Huddersfield, Yorks) and Sarah ROCK (house servant, 20, born Roystone, Yorks).
1861 census: at 12 Queens Street, Barnsley (RAYNER except as indicated), John (head, 47, pork butcher, born Penestone, Yorks), Frances (wife, 41, born Silkstone, Yorks), Henry (son, 20, assistant, born Barnsley, Yorks), John (son, 18, assistant, born Barnsley), Elizabeth Ellen (daughter, 13, scholar, born Barnsley), Frances Jane (daughter, 8, scholar, born Barnsley), Alfred (son, 5, scholar, born Barnsley) and Emma (4, scholar, born Barnsley). Also James MALKIN (nephew, 21. journeyman, born Barnsley), Jane PEARSON (general servant, 18) and Elizabeth MALKIN (general servant [and probably niece], 16, born Barnsley.
1871 census: Frances probably died in 1865; John not found: some of their children were at 4 Albion Street, Barnsley (all as RAYNOR), Elizabeth (head, 23, housekeeper, born Keresforth, Yorks), Henry (brother, 28, butcher, born Kexboro.), John (brother, 26, butcher, born Keresforth), Frances J (sister, 18, dressmaker, born Barnsley), Alfred (brother, 15, scholar, born Barnsley) and Emma (sister, 14, scholar, born Barnsley).
