Notes |
- From the St Mildred Canterbury Parish Register, as noted by Cliff Minter, September 2006: A James Minter witnessed the marriage on 27 February 1816 between Edward Woodward bachelor and Mary Ann Woodruff spinster both of this parish. Cliff thinks this witness was James of Rosemary Lane which is only 100 metres from St Mildreds Church.
A bricklayer of Rosemary Lane in 1818, of Ivy Lane in 1819, of Stour Street in 1820, of Northgate Street between 1822 and 1830, of Northgate Street in 1830 and of Broad Street in 1831 - 34. A plasterer and bricklayer of Broad Street in 1838 (Topographical History and Directory of Canterbury - Stapleton & Co, 1838), a bricklayer of Broad Street in 1839 (Pigots Directory of Kent).
1841 census: in King Street, Ramsgate, James (45, journeyman bricklayer), Mary (45), George (20, journeyman bricklayer), Mary (15), Charles (15), Julie (10) and William (5). Also in King Street, living as a servant aged 15 with John Hake (35, grocer) and family, was Edward Minter. Cliff Minter thinks he may have been another son of James and Mary. He appears in 1851, aged 25, journeyman bricklayer, at Squirrels, Village, Boughton under Blean but no trace has been found after that.
Appeared in the 1849 South East Coast Directory and the 1849 Isle of Thanet Directory as James Minter, lodging house. 3 Royal Crescent, Ramsgate. Wife Mary similarly listed.
1851 census: at 4 Artillery Street, St Gregory, Canterbury, James (58, bricklayer), Mary (57), Maria (31, school mistress), Mary (26) and William (17, painter's apprentice).
The St Gregory Canterbury Monumental Inscription reads "In memory of James Minter who departed this life March 26* 1859 aged 66 years. Also of Mary his wife who departed this life June 17 1870 aged 76 years. Also Mary daughter of the above who died September 5 1889 aged 65 years".
* The report of James's death in the Kentish Gazete of 5 April 1859 gave the date of death as 25 March.
In 1861, Mary, now widowed, lived with her daughter Maria (qv).
