| Notes |
- 1841 census: in The Chain, Sandwich, Kent, Ann (45, widow), John (25, mariner), Matilda (20, female servant), George (15, mariner), Mary (12, female servant) and Mary (5 months). The latter was Matilda's illegitimate daughter.
1851 census (indexed as MONTER by Ancestry.com): in Corn Market, St Peter, Sandwich, Ann (60, widow) and her sons John (36, mariner) and Edward (30, mariner) lived with Ann's daughter Mary A SMITH (24), her husband Joseph SMITH (29, victualler, born Ashford, Kent) and children Harriet SMITH (3) and Sarah SMITH (1). Ann and her sons were described respectively as 'mother' and 'brother', which should have been 'in-law'.
1861 census: in Corn Market, St Peter, Sandwich, Ann (68, widow, lodger (crossed through and 'house servant' inserted in a different hand)) and her son John (45, railway porter) lived with Ann's daughter Mary A SMITH (36), her husband Joseph SMITH (40, licensed victualler) and children Harriet SMITH (13, scholar), Sarah SMITH (11, scholar), Julia SMITH (9, scholar) and Joseph SMITH (7, scholar). Ann and her son were described respectively as 'mother' and 'brother', which should have been 'in-law'. Also in the house was Joseph SMITH's niece, Mary Minter (21, visitor) - presumably Matilda's illegitimate daughter.
1871 census: at The Mermaid, Cattle Market, St Peter, Sandwich, Ann (80, widow) and her sons John (56, watchman, SER) and George P (48, master mariner) lived with Ann's widowed daughter Mary A SMITH (44, licensed victualler) and children Sarah SMITH (21), Julia SMITH (19) and Joseph SMITH (17, grocer assistant). Also there was a boarder, George R LUFF (widower, 44, carpenter, born Northbourne, Kent).
1881 census: Ann died in 1876; her daughter Mary Ann, now Mary Ann LUFF (widow, 54, licensed victualler) continued to run the Mermaid in Cattle Market, Sandwich. Living with her was her brother John (66, mariner). Mary Ann's marriage to George Luff was very short-lived - he died in the same quarter in which they married.
1891 census: Mary Ann LUFF (widow, 64) was a 'hospitalian, retired licensed victualler' in St Bartholomews Hospital, St Clement, Sandwich. She died in Q1 1900.
2006: The Mermaid, Cattle Market, Sandwich is now a branch of HSBC bank.
