  Notes	1851 census: in Dark Hill, West Dean, Gloucestershire: John ROCK (30, quarryman, born St James, Britol) and his wife Ellen ROCK (24, born West Dean, Gloucestershire) were with Ellen's parents John GRINDELL (65, pauper labourer, born Coleford, Glos.) and Alice GRINDELL (60, born West Dean). 1861 census: in Drybook, West Dean, Gloucestershire (all ROCK), John (head, 39, stone quarry man, born Bristol), Ann (wife, 30, born West Dean, Glos.), John (8, born West Dean, Glos.), Sarah (daughter, 6, born West Dean, Glos.), Benjamin (son, 4, born West Dean, Glos.), Lucy (daughter, 2, born West Dean, Glos.) and Henry (son, 7 months, born West Dean, Glos.). From John J Minter, Feb 2022: "On the 9th March, 1867, The Monmouth Beacon tells how John and Ann with 7 children came into the Monmouth Workhouse as the weather was icy and he could not cut stone in frosty weather.  He cheekily asked them to pay him 12/- a week until he got work! This was reduced to 5/- and when they all left, his sickly children received new pinafores and shoes." 1871 census: in Sling Pitt, West Dean, Gloucestershire (all ROCK), John (head, 49, stone cutter, born Bristol, Glos.), Ann (wife, 42, born Newland, Glos.), Sarah (daughter, 16, born Newland, Glos.), Benjamin (son, 14, born Newland, Glos.), Lucy (daughter, 11, not at school, born Newland, Glos.), Robert (son, 9, not at school, born Newland, Glos.), Hubert (son, 6, not at school, born Newland, Glos.) and George (son, 4, not at school, born Newland, Glos.). 1881 census: in Winalls Hill Lane End, West Dean, Gloucestershire (indexed by ancstry.com as ROOK) (all ROCK), John (head, 62, stone quarry man, born Bristol), Ann (wife, 53, born Gloucestershire), Ben (son, 23, coal mnier, born West Dean, Glos.), Lucy (daughter, 21, born West Dean, Glos.), Robert (son, 18, coal miner, born West Dean, Glos.), Hubert (son, 16, coal miner, born West Dean, Glos.), George (son, 14, coal miner, born West Dean, Glos.), Emma (daughter, 8, school, born West Dean, Glos.) and Elizabeth (daughter, 6, school, born West Dean, Glos.). John's death was probably the one registered at Monmouth in Q2 1889. The age quoted, 71, suggests a birth about 1818 which although earlier than the 1861 and 1871 census records suggests, tallies more or less with the 1881 census. So I'm using 1818 as John Rock's birth year. The Monmouthshire burial register gives John's surname as RUCK and his address as Monmouth Union. In the 1891 census, John's widow Ann appeared with her daughter Lucy and husband Ephraim BINKS (qv).
