- The following is taken from http://www.auction-net.co.uk which records the sale by auction in 2014 by Spinks of a collection of Alec's medals:
Major Alec Bruce Whale, (1922-87), born Cornwall; Commission Second Lieutenant, Leicestershire Regiment on 31.5.1941 and served during the Second World War in Burma; transferred to the King's African Rifles and served with the 6th Tanganyika Rifles Battalion, K.A.R. during the Burma campaign; promoted Lieutenant, 2.12.1944; after the end of the War transferred to the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, and served with the Regiment in Germany and in Somaliland; promoted Captain, 2.6.1949; served on attachment with the Kings African Rifles (7th Kenya Rifles Battalion) during the 'Mau Mau' rebellion in Kenya, and later with a K.A.R. battalion in Mauritius; promoted Major, 2.6.1956; retired, 30.11.1961.
The medals auctoned are detailed as:
1939-1945 Star; Burma Star; Defence and War Medals; Africa General Service 1902-56, E.II.R., one clasp, Kenya (Capt A.B. Whale KAR.); General Service 1918-62, E.II.R., one clasp, Arabian Peninsula (Major A B Whale SCLI), good very fine, last scarce to unit (6) £500-600.
The following obituary appears on the website of The Somerset & Cornwall Light Infantry:
Maj. Alec Bruce Whale - died 25th. December 1987, aged 65yrs. Prior to the commencement of WW2 he was due to go to Durham University, the war intervened however and he found himself in training with the 10th. Devons. He was then commissioned into the KAR. serving in Burma with the 1/6th. Tanganyka Rifles.
Immediately after the war he transferred to the DCLI and was posted to 5 DCLI in Germany. He was later posted to 1 DCLI in British Somaliland. There followed another long period of secondment with the 7th. Kenya Rifles and the 6th.Tanganyka Rifles in Nairobi and Mauritius. He was posted to 1 SCLI in Osnabruck shortly before the Bn. returned to the UK. and based at Seaton Barracks, Plymouth. He was for a short period of time the OC. C Coy. He retired within a few month's of the Bn. returning to
the UK.
