| Notes |
- It's not clear who George's parents were. If the age he gave on censuses 1841 to 1861 was accurate, he'd have been born about 1800. The IGI has a George Gregory baptised on 31 August 1800 at Baslow but only the mother's name is shown, Ann Gregory. Brendan Molloy adds "I found the record about George in Baslow Parish Records, been to Records Office in Matlock a couple of times, says mother Ann father blank, place of birth Cupola. Record Office staff looked and said he was illigitimate."
November 2007: Brendan Molloy, whose tree is on Genes Reunited, is connected to the Gregory family via Thomas Gregory's daughter Catherine, who married Simon Heavey from Galway, Ireland. Brendan says:
"George Gregory was born in Cupola Cottage Baslow Derby, he was baptised on 31 August 1800. There was no father seems our George was illegitimate. Joseph and Susannah Gregory were also living in this cottage at the time but I can't work out what relationship they are yet. They were old enough to be her parents, married in 1782, but no record of that even though there are records of them having children. Was Ann sent to stay with country relatives because of shame of unmarried birth? The cottage was owned by the Gardom family of Yeld Farm. I don't know how or why George ended up in Sheffield but he was a blacksmith by trade.
He lived in Coalpit Lane which is now called Cambridge Street in a shop, across the road on Cross Burgess Street he had a workshop where he made fenders. (Coalpit Lane/Cambridge Street, Cross Burgess Street and Burgess Street form three sides of modern John Lewis building in Sheffield).
Later on he moved to the Soho Wheel on Bridge Street where he again made fenders, records for 1864 show him employing sons John and Andrew. He then lived at 35 Chapel Street where he died."
Brendan has also provided a transcript of a Gregory tombstone found in Sheffield General Cemetery which contains the following:
In
Loving Memory
of George
son of
George and Sarah Gregory
Who Died January 15th 1829, aged 11 months
and is interred in St Pauls Churchyard
Also Thomas, Their son
Who died August 23rd 1863, aged 32 years.
Also Andrew, their son
Who died November 21st 1865, aged 28 years.
Also the above
Sarah Gregory
Who died May 7th 1868 aged 64 years.
" Full assurance of joyful ressurection "
Also Frances their Daughter,
Who Died February 26th 1870, aged 23 years.
Also the above George Gregory, who died
August 12th 1873, aged 73 years.
" They rest from their labours "
Also of their daughter, Margaret Birch
Who died April 23th 1879 aged 44 years.
This reveals that George and Sarah had more children that was originally thought and the record has been amended to reflect what the tombstone says.
1841 census: in Burgess Street, South Sheffield, George (40, black smith), Sarah (35), John (15), Ann (11), Thomas (10), Sarah (8), Margaret (5), Andrew (4) and Martha (2).
1851 census: at 60 Coalpit Lane, Eccleshall Bierlow, Sheffield, George (49, smith), Sarah (49), Thomas (19), Sarah (18, dressmaker), Harriett (15), Cornelius (13), Martha (12) and twin sister Mary (12 (not found in 1841)), Elizabeth (8, scholar), Harriott (6, scholar) and Frances (4, scholar). It seems that some names changed - the first-mentioned Harriett could have been the Margaret of 1841 and Cornelius could have been Andrew in 1841. The birth or baptism of Andrew/Cornelius has not been traced.
1861 census: at 60 Coalpit Lane, Eccleshall Bierlow, Sheffield, George (60, fender maker), Sarah (57), Mary (22, dressmaker), Elizabeth (19, dressmaker), Harriett (17, dressmaker) and Frances (14, scholar).
Round about midnight on March 11th 1864 the Dale Dyke Dam at Bradfield, near Sheffield, collapsed, releasing a torrent of water that killed some 250 people. It devastated an area that stretched from the Dam, down the Loxley Valley, through Malin Bridge and Hillsborough, to Sheffield town centre and beyond.
Following the disaster, compensation claims were made by individuals and companies against the Sheffield Water Company for loss of property and livelihood, and for injury and/or death of relatives.
Brendan Molloy is responsible for finding that George Gregory, fender maker of 82 Bridge Street, Sheffield claimed compensation of £21.4s and was awarded £14 'assessed by agreement incl costs' on 30 June 1865. (www2.shu.ac.uk/sfca/)
1871 census: at 35 Chapel Street, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield, George (widower, 70, ...itching fender maker employing 1 man), Harriet (27, housekeeper) and Herbert BIRCH (grandson, 8, scholar, born Liverpool. Lancs).
George's death certificate shows that he was a fender manufacturer and died aged 72 of heart disease. The informant was Elizabeth Sivil of 200 Forncett Street, Brightside Bierlow, present at death.
