Notes |
- 1881 census: at 31 Quilter Road, Bethnal Green, London (all HUNTER), Arthur (head, 22, clothiers cutter, born Brampton, Hunts), Annie (wife, 21, born Barnsley, Yorks) and Alfred A (son, 9 months, born Bethnal Green).
1891 census: at 339 & 341, St Anns Hill Road, St Mary, Nottingham (all HUNTER), Arthur (head, married, 32, master tailor, born Brampton, Hunts), Annie (wife, married, 31, born Barnsley, Yorks), Alfred A (son, 10, born Hackney E, London) and Alice H (daughter, 8, born Hackney E, London). Also Kate HUNSLEY (sister-in-law, single, 23, tailoress, born Newark on Trent, Notts).
Kelly Owens has kindly provided a cutting from the Leicester Journal, 17th Jan 1896. It reported that Mr Arthur Hunter (Independent Labour Party) was one of three men nominated as candidates for the vacancy in the representation of St Margaret's Ward on the Town Council.
Annie died in Q4 1891 and Arthur married Annie's sister Kate in Q3 1892. Kelly Owens has pointed out that until 1907 it was illegal for a man to marry his deceased wife's sister. This suggests that Arthur and Annie were never married, which allowed Arthur legally to marry Kate.
In 1892 Arthur and Kate had a daughter, Hilda. At some point after 1892 Arthur left Kate and in the 1911 census appeared as follows:
in Elm High Road, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire (4 rooms) (all HUNTER) Arthur (head, 45, married, tailor (practical), born Brampton, Hunts.), Jennie (wife, 37, married for 13 years, 1 child, living, born Nantwich, Cheshire) and Winnie (daughter, 3, born Montgomeryshire).
I cannot find Arthur or Jennie in the 1901 census. As far as is known they never married - the reference to "married 13 years" in the 1911 census could be an indication of when their relationship began.
Meanwhle, the 1901 census shows Kate as a widow [she was actually still married to Arthur at this point] aged 30 and her daughter Hilda aged 8 living with Kate's sister Mary WALKER, aged 46 and also a widow. Kate was to marry Richard MASON bigamously later in 1901.
I've been unable to find Arthur & Annie's daughter (Alice H) after 1892. It's possible that their son Alfred A married Mary Ann PROTHEROE in Southwark 1902 but I haven't found any trace after that.
Arthur died in 1915. and Jennie/Jane subsequently married, claiming to be a widow.
