- A master mariner, Lloyds Captains Register Certificate of Service - George Anson 1855 - 1860, Impetuous 1862 - 1868.
A website found in November 2005 records that Thomas Wood Minter and William White FOREMAN were owners of 'Impetuous', originally built as a snow by Hoad Brothers at Rye, converted to a brig in 1860 and to a brigantine in 1864. She weighed 163 tons and her reg. no. was 19009, registered at Whitstable.
July 2009: Pauline Kay Minter, while researching shipping records on Alderney, came across a Mr Minter of the ship 'Impetuous' which was sailing to Cherbourg.
1851 census: no trace of Thomas (probably at sea); wife Matilda (32) and daughter Christiana (7, scholar) were living in High Street, Whitstable, together with a female servant.
1861 census: in Pump Street, Hartlepool, Durham, Thomas Wood (39, master mariner), Mary (32) and Thomas (2).
1871 census: Thomas was counted as the captain of the schooner 'Impetuous' at Alderney, Channel Islands - aged 50. His family were at 34 Sydenham Street, Whitstable, second wife Mary (42, mariner's wife), Ann Eliza (22), Thomas (12, scholar), Eden (8, scholar), George (2) and Herbert (1).
Lived at Sydenham Street, Whitstable in 1874 - 1878.
Appeared in the Post Office Directories of 1874 and 1878 as Thomas Wood Minter, master mariner, Sydenham Street, Whitstable.
1881 census: at 34 Sydenham Street, Whitstable, Thomas W (60, master mariner), Mary (52), E. J. (18, mariner) and G. R. (12, scholar). Son Herbert (11, scholar) was living next door at 33 Sydenham Street - described for some reason as son of the head of the household, Elizabeth LOTT, a mariner's wife. Son Thomas, 22, unmarried, was Mate on the 'Impetuous' at Guernsey, Channel Islands.
1891 census: Thomas, 69, a widower, was counted aboard the 'Utopia' as her master, at Durham. Son Thomas (32, seaman) was lodging at 68 Low Commerce Street, Middlesbrough. Son Herbert E (21, seaman) was staying at 1 Pump Street, Hartlepool, Durham with his aunt Rebecca POUNDER (53, unmarried) and her niece Sarah Ann CLARE (26, unmarried, born Hartlepool). Son George was staying with his brother Eden (qv).
Appeared in the Pike's Blue Book for Canterbury and District, Herne Bay & Whitstable, 1897 - 98 as Capt. T Minter, High Street, Whitstable.
1901 census: at 85 High Street, Whitstable, Thomas W (79, pensioner), son George R (30, mariner) and a female general domestic servant.
