| Notes |
- Note, December 2007. The Jane Minter who appeared in the 1851 (and possibly the 1841) censuses transcribed below was probably Ann Jane Minter born 4 June 1817.
1841 census: the 1841 census at St John's Hospital, Canterbury, Kent includes Jane Minter, 25, not born in Kent. She appears on the same page as John Minter, 60, not born in Kent, and Henry Minter, 20, born in Kent but was not necessarily related to them. The fact that this Jane Minter was apparently not born in Kent perhaps makes it less likely that the entry relates to Ann Jane Minter. Ann Jane may of course have been living in Whitstable in 1841 but since the 1841 census for Whitstable hasn't survived we cannot check.
1851 census: Jane Minter, 35, lived in Knights Lane, Whitstable as housekeeper to John Harris (37, railway labourer, born Whitstable). With them were Richard Minter (8), Frances Minter (5), Mary Ann Minter (3) and Rosannah Minter (2 months).
All four of Ann Jane's children were illegitimate and registered as Minters. One of them, Frances Jane, was baptised as an adult in 1866 as the daughter of Ann Jane Minter, Whitstable, singlewoman. The fact that Frances Jane's mother's name was at that time given as Ann Jane supports the case for assuming that Jane Minter and Ann Jane Minter were one and the same person.
1861 census: an entry in the 1861 census suggests that Jane became known as Ann Jane Harris, wife of John Harris: in Tooley Street, Whitstable were John Harris (53, rail labourer), Ann Jane Harris (wife, 43), Richard Harris (18, son, rail labourer), Rosanna Harris (daughter, 14), Francis Harris (sic) (daughter, 10, scholar) and John Harris (son, 8, scholar). There are obvious age discrepancies! The birth registration of John Harris has not been found under Minter or Harris.
John Harris's death was registered in Q3 1867.
1871 census: the following details probably refer to Ann Jane: at 13 Tooley Street, Whitstable, Jane HARRIS (widow, charwoman), Fanny HARRIS [probably Frances] (25, charwoman), John HARRIS (20, coal labourer) and Mary Ann HARRIS (daughter, 5). As the 1881 census shows, Mary Ann was in fact Frances' daughter. Her birth was probably the one registered at Blean in Q4 1866 as Mary A H Minter (the 'H' probably standing for 'Harris'.
Ann Jane's death as Jane Minter was registered in Q3 1876.
