      Joined the Royal Artillery on 28 March 1892 and transferred to the Royal Horse Artillery on 1 January 1895. Discharged in 1898 after 7 years service, recalled on 24 October 1899 and served in South Africa during the Boer War; discharged after 12 years service, re-enlisted in 1914 and was stationed at Woolwich until after the war. Lived at Marquis Road, Harpenden upon leaving the services and kept a smallholding with pigs, geese and goats.
