He was a private number 56442 in the Royal Army Service Corps and was discharged (as being no longer fit for war service) at Aldershot on 18 April 1917, having enlisted on 22 February 1915 and having served for 1 year 51 days. Arthur's disabilty was stated as 'chronic carrier of bacillus paratyphosus'. At that time his trade was given as farm servant and his intended place of residence, Peddam Road, Hemblington, Norwich. He was awarded a £15 gratuity.
