| Notes |
- Baptised as son of George & Esther Hunsley of Hibaldstow, Lincolnshire.
William (an only child since the death of brother Charles, aged 2), appeared as William DUFFILL in the 1871 census, with his mother and step-father.
Although it shows surname as HUNSLAW and birthplace as Hiblestaw, the following almost certainly refers to this William Hunsley:
1881 census: at Grange, Bagmore & Burton by Stather, Lincs, William HUNSLAW (servant, 17, unmarried, farm servant, born Hiblestaw). William was living with the DRAYTON family which was probably tied to the Moors, farming family at the Grange.
Mary Allison (23, general servant, born 'N.K.') was also a servant at Grange. This is perhaps where William and Mary Ann met.
From The Courier-Mail, Brisbane, Wed 17 May 1939:
"The death is announced of Mr. William Hunsley, aged 75. He was a native of Hibstow (sic), England, and the son of a Methodist minister*. He came to Australia with his wife and family on the Dacca in 1880**, and worked on sugar plantations at Bundaberg and afterwards as a ganger on road construction. Five years later he selected land at Cordalba, and for 23 years engaged in sugar growing there. In 1915 Mr. Hunsley purchased a farming properly at Wooroolin.
He was prominent in patriotic work during the war; associated with the erection of the Memorial School of Arts and hall; and a member of the Kingaroy Masonic Lodge and
the Methodist Church. In 1933 Mr. and Mrs. Hunsley celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, and two years later retired to live in Kingaroy. The late Mr. Hunsley is survived by his widow, seven daughters - Mesdames E. Schuhmaker (Bald Hills), H. Fritz
(Milton), C. Dodson (Tewantin), T. E. Lewis (Pittsworth), R. Hannant (Memerambi), G.
Towns, (Kingaroy), and L. McBride (Memerambi), and one son, Mr G. Hunsley (Woroo-
lin)."
* I have no record of William's father being called Charlie or of his being a Methodist minister. Interestingly, William's death certificate gives his father as Charlie Hunsley, Minister of Religion.
** according to great-granddaughter Noeleen Hogan (by email in September 2017):
"William, Mary, Jane and George Hunsley travelled to Maryborough Queensland Australia on the Dacca in 1887."
Noeleen adds:
The information that you have about children born after they arrived here in correct, I have more details with dates etc. [The famiy] did live at Cordalba and then Wooroolin and then retired to live in Kingaroy.
George then worked the Wooroolin Farm until he died in 1963, my cousin Ian Hunsley still has the original farm.
George married Mary Christina Goeths and had Beryl, Iris, Roy, Arthur, Elvie and Rita.
Elvie is my mother, mum married Keith Mesken 2.2.1952 in Kingaroy at the Methodist church. Keith and Elvie had four children Wayne, Yvonne, Noeleen and Alan."
