1871 census: at 5 Wallends Terrace, Lewes (all CHATFIELD, born Lewes except as indicated), Edward (head, 56, timber merchant employing 21(?) men), Elizabeth (wife (51), Thomas (son, 26, timber merchant), Edward (son, 24, commercial traveller), Elizabeth (daughter, 22), Susannah (daughter, 20), Sarah (daughter, 19), Alice (daughter, 15), Edith (daughter, 13) and Emily (daughter, 9). Also Charlotte ROBINSON (22, cook, born Sidlesham(?)), Louisa SAUNDERS (20, housemaid, born Lewes), Fanny SHEELE(?) (34, nurse, born Steyning) and Sarah BALCOMBE (24, housemaid, born Laughton).
1881 census: at Belle Vue House, St Anns Crescent, Lewes (all CHATFIELD, born Lewes except as indicated), Edward (head, 66, merchant employing 60 men), Elizabeth (wife (61, born South Town, Suffolk), Edith (daughter, 22) and Emily (daughter, 19). Also a visitor and 4 servants.
Belle Vue House later became Southdown House. Significant dates in the house's history were provided by Don Howell in October 2015:
1871 - the building, originally called Belle Vue House, is completed and occupied by Edward Chatfield and family.
1889 - Leased to the Ashford family.
1890 - Daisy Ashford writes "The Young Visiters".
1896 - East Sussex Technical School for women and girls (subsequently The School of Domestic Econom).
1927 - County Library moves in during October/November and by 1937 has taken over the whole building.
1951 - New Exchange Department building completed.
1964 - Prefab built on back lawn and back steps demolished.
1968 - Music Library moves into separate prefab in lower car park.
1974 - Technical Services moves into separate accommodation at 47a Western Road.
1980 - Southdown House closed to public following transfer of Sussex books to Lewes Library.
1992 - Technical Services moves back into wooden prefab at Southdown House.
2002 - February - April: Library Service moves out of Southdown House after 74½ years.
2015 - Southdown House has been converted into a number of apartments.

24 June 1885 The Will of Edward Chatfield late of St Ann's-crescent Lewes in the County of Sussex Esquire who died 25 April 1885 at Lewes was proved at the Principal Registry by Elizabeth Chatfield of St Ann's-crescent widow the relict Thomas Chatfield of Lewes Gentleman the son and Susannah Chatfield of St Ann's-crescent the daughter three of the Executors. Personal estate £11,354 2s 4d. (Equivalent to just over £1million in 2015 )
