| Notes |
- When he married in 1906 George William was 24, a bricklayer living in Grundisburgh, Suffolk and gave his father's name as just 'Minter', a carpenter.
It's thought that this is the same person who was born illegitimately (and registered as William Minter) on 16 June 1882 to Mary Ann Minter, formerly Emmerson, a greengrocer, the widow of John Minter of Ipswich, who died in 1878. The rationale for this is that:
1. in 1891 we find a William Minter aged 9 living at The Street, Grundisburgh with his married sister Laura, age 25, born Ipswich - this was almost certainly the Laura (Minter) who was born in 1861, daughter of John Minter and Mary Ann (Emerson).
2. in 1901 the same William Minter was still living with his sister Laura, age now given more accurately as 39 in Main Street Cottage, Grundisburgh. William was 18, a journeyman bricklayer.
The age, occupation and place of residence point strongly to George William being Mary Ann Minter's son born on 16 June 1882; the only question being, where did the name George come from?

1911 census: in Grundisburgh, Suffolk (4 rooms), William (head, 29, married, bricklayer, worker, born Ipswich), Ann Maria (wife, 29, married 5 years, 3 children, 2 living 1 died, born Grundisburgh), Lily Maud (daughter, 4, born Grundisburgh) and Hilda May (daughter, 1, born Grundisburgh).
Form signed William Minter.
As just William, enlisted with the Royal Engineers on 12 December 1915, then aged 34 years 6 months, bricklayer of Grundisburgh near Woodbridge, Suffolk. He said he'd previously served in the Royal Engineers. Service no. 429475 Next of kin Mrs Annie Maria Minter, same address, whom he married at Grundisburgh on 3 February 1906. Three children listed: Lily Maud, 20 Dec 1906; Hilda May 24 Feb 1910; and John William 13 Jul 1912, all born Grundisburgh.
Not posted overseas apparently. Discharged on 25 June 1919.
1921 census: in Church Road, Badley, Suffolk (all MINTER), William (head, 39, married, born Ipswich, bricklayer with Maidwell & Co Ltd, builders, Gt Finborough near Stowmarket), Ann Maria (wife, 39, married, born Grundisburgh, home duties), Lily Maud (daughter, 14y 6m, born Grundisburgh, home duties), Hilda May (daughter, 11y 4m, born Grundisburgh, whole time school) and John William (son, 8y 11m, born Grundisburgh, part time school (invalid)). Also Dorothy May KNIGHTS (foster child, 4, parents both dead, born Woodbridge, Suffolk
1939 Register: at 1 Ideal Dwellings, Gipping R.D., Suffolk
Minter, William born 12 Jun 1881 [later amended to 16 Jun 1881 - both seem to be a year out], married , bricklayer
Minter Ann M born 16 Jun 1881 married unpaid domestic duties
--- 1 closed record ---
Minter, later amended to JAY, Joyce M, born 9 Apr 1931, single, at school.
Daughter Hilda May was with her husband-to-be Clarence BRADFORD in what appears to be the house next door.
September 2016: the listing of Joyce M Minter, as a member of this household is a surprise, given her birth date. Her birth was registered in Q2 1931 at Bosmere and her mother's maiden name was shown as Minter. It seems unlikely that Joyce's mother was Ann Maria (George William's wife) who by 1931 would have been around 49. Joyce's birth certificate probably shows her mother's name but hasn't been obtained. For the time being Joyce is shown as George William and Ann Maria Minter's daughter.
George's death is probably that registered as William G, aged 84 at Hartismere (4b/875) in Q2 1967.
